What's the point of working hard if society is classless? Society needs structure where the best students strive to get into elite schools and go on to become high SES individuals.

Had there been no elite schools I would not have bothered to slog for my exams in order get ahead in life.

And when I started my working life I wouldn't have fought to get to the top echelons of management and then start out on my own. I did it so that I could live in a better home, drive a better car, travel business class or better and most importantly, have a mass of low SES characters that I could hire and boss around.

I think studying is to give you self actualization. But the problem with Singaporean is that we are stuck at the lower point of Maslow's Hierachy of needs. That's where meritocracy lies.

i think he meant it in a kind way, he probably can sense the unhappiness on the divide between the classes. he might also be implying the rich and successful sinkies are getting arrogant which i strongly agree with.
