Lesson learnt, the entire shield must be transparent.

They were totally unprepared for it. If you noticed when the grenade landed below the shield the guy didn't even know what it was or probably didn't even notice it until it was too late. Their inaction moments after the grenade landed was the reason for this causalty.

so the Thai Police didn't make use of their shield?

I don't think the shield can protect them from a grenade most likely able to protect them from low caliber firearms and hand held weapons.

They were lucky that grenade wasn't a normal powerful one it looks to be a poorly home made grenade. If you watch grenades used in war they are thrown in to kill and maim large groups of soldiers well entrenched.
