Church accountant sentence to 5 yr jail for misappropriating more than S$380,000

SINGAPORE: A former accountant of a church has been sentenced to five years' jail for misappropriating more than S$380,000.

Fifty-six-year-old Lim Seng Hoo admitted to two counts of criminal breach of trust.

Lim committed the offences between January 2011 and January 2012 when he was working at the Norwegian Seamen's Mission Church Singapore.

As accountant of the church, Lim was given access to its funds and was made an authorised signatory of the church's bank account.

He was also provided with cheques for this account.

Court documents stated Lim siphoned money from the bank account using various methods.

He would issue cheques to himself first and then deposit the money into his own account or encash the cheques later.

Lim would also use the cheques to make payments for his personal bills.

He would then try to cover his tracks by disguising the outflow of the cash as loans.

In January 2012, the head office of the church in Norway asked about the "unauthorised loans".

Lim said the loans were simply internal transfers of funds.

He was only found out when he could not be contacted.

The $38 million was for Sun Ho's legitimate crossover project. It was not used for the personal gain of any church member. The project reached out to the secular world and resulted in many non believers becoming good Christians.

Spreading the word of Christ is one of the most fundamental duties of any church and each resulting conversion is priceless. $38 million is peanuts compared to love and blessing created when the Lord gains new followers to his fold.
