French President Emmanuel Macon has scrapped his planned address to the nation amid the “terrible fire” at the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, which is burning down in Paris.
Macron was set to hold a large press conference at the Elysee palace on Monday. The president was expected to unveil a set of measures for the country in response to the Yellow Vest protest, which have been rocking the country for the past few months.

The said measures are believed to be based on the results of the “great national debate,” held by the government in an attempt to funnel protest from the streets into a discussion instead. “We have decided to transform anger into solutions,” Macron wrote on Twitter, announcing the press conference. “For months, we listened. Tomorrow, I will answer.”
The grand unveiling of the government’s measures, however, was marred by the massive fire at the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, which caught fire shortly before the president’s address. Citing the “terrible fire,” Macron scrapped the event.
Macron is expected to arrive at the scene shortly, according to Elysee officials. Meanwhile, the cathedral’s spire and roof have partially collapsed.

A fire at the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France has destroyed most of the roof and collapsed the church's central spire. Eyewitness videos show smoke and fire engulfing the jewel of Gothic architecture.
The blaze broke out in the scaffolding around the spire on Monday afternoon, Paris firefighters confirmed, adding that a major operation to tackle the fire is underway.

It is unknown what might have caused the fire.

The medieval cathedral is one of the main attractions of the French capital, seeing 12 million tourists a year, more than the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower.

The incident took place as the jewel of the Gothic architecture was undergoing a major overhaul costing €11 million ($ 12.43 million), with the work scheduled to be finished around 2022.

Notre Dame's roof and the central spire have been destroyed by the flames. There was no information on the status of priceless relics stored inside the cathedral, including the Crown of Thorns and a piece of the True Cross.

Last week, 16 bronze statues representing 12 apostles and four evangelists from the New Testament were lifted off the spire of the cathedral by crane. Some scaffolding could be seen close to the flames leaping out near the cathedral’s spire, before it toppled over.

The spire itself was made of wood and covered with lead. It has long been in a bad shape as elements of the construction dating back to the 12th century century have been damaged by weather, pollution and time.
Construction of Notre Dame began in 1163. It was extensively restored in the mid-1800s.

Of all the relics kept at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris (Notre-Dame de Paris), the Crown of Thorns and a piece of the True Cross are the most revered. Their status is unknown as the 850-year-old cathedral goes up in flames.
Relics believed to be a piece of the cross on which Jesus was crucified, as well as the Crown of Thorns he wore, have been kept at the cathedral for centuries. The braided circle held together by golden thread has about 70 or so thorns attached. The relics were obtained from the Byzantine Empire in 1238, and brought to Paris by King Louis IX.

Notre-Dame is the most visited monument in the French capital. Over 12 million people visit the cathedral every year, making it the most visited monument in Paris – ahead of the than the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, according to official statistics.

It has been damaged and restored many times over its 850-year history, but never so severely as during Monday’s fire that has toppled its spire and caused its roof to completely collapse.

Construction on the original cathedral, located on the central island of Paris (Ile de la cite) began in 1163, and was largely completed by 1260. It was fitted with additional flying buttresses in the 1500s, to support the imposing Gothic structure.

Built like a “poor people’s book,” the cathedral’s exterior featured sculptures and reliefs illustrating the stories from the Bible – for example, the western facade facing the square showed the Last Judgment – as well as gargoyles and other monstrous creatures.

Notre-Dame was damaged and desecrated during and after the 1789 French Revolution, but was somewhat repaired for the December 1804 coronation of Emperor Napoleon I.
Victor Hugo’s novel 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1831) revived the popular interest in the landmark, and restoration work began in 1845. Its famous stained glass windows – first built in 1225 – and exterior statuary, were rebuilt at this time. Additional cleaning and restoration work was done in the 1960s and again in the 1990s.

The cathedral has been a target of several terrorist plots in recent years. In February 2017, four people were arrested in Montpelier on charges of plotting to attack the cathedral. A car filled with explosives was found outside Notre Dame in September 2016.

US President Donald Trump has chimed in on the fire ravaging the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, suggesting the firefighters can use “flying water tankers” and “act quickly.”
“So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!” the US president tweeted on Monday, minutes before the cathedral’s spire crashed due to fire damage, and parts of the roof caved in.

Fire broke out in the scaffolding on Notre Dame’s roof on Monday afternoon, heavily damaging the 850-year-old Gothic cathedral as it was undergoing restoration. It is the most-visited monument in Paris, ahead of the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.

French Officials Slam Trump's Proposed Solution to Notre Dame Fire

As news spread Monday of the catastrophic fire at Notre Dame cathedral in central Paris, U.S. President Donald Trump offered his thoughts on the matter. Two hours later, French safety officials offered a withering take-down on those thoughts.

After expressing his shock at seeing the fire in a tweet, Trump suggested, “Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!” France’s civil defense agency, Sécurité Civile, without mentioning Trump, underscored why that would be a terrible idea.

“All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral,” it wrote.

It was a reply that quickly got the Twitter population buzzing and a not-so-subtle way for French authorities to suggest that the massive fire was not an issue where they wanted fire-fighting advice from a politician.

French fire officials, late Monday, said Notre Dame had been saved from “total destruciton,” though the roof did collapse.

The U.S. and French governments have had a rocky relationship for several months. Last August, president Emmanuel Macron said Europe “can no longer rely” on the U.S. for defense after Trump reportedly threatened to pull the U.S. out of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Here's How To Help Notre Dame In Paris After Fire Damaged The Historic Cathedral
By Shelby Black

On Monday, April 15, the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, caught fire, leading to devastating damage. The fire eventually grew and resulted in the cathedral's iconic top spire to collapse and fall off the building. No one expected this tragedy to hit one of Paris' most beloved sights, so here's how to help Notre Dame in Paris. It doesn't matter where you're located — a little help goes a long way.
Notre Dame was engulfed in flames that spread across its entire structure for hours after the spark lit. Firefighters in Paris are attempting to contain the fire at the time of publication, asking residents to avoid the area at all costs. The Notre Dame Cathedral is located in the Île de la Cité and was built in the 13th century, representing one of the most incredibly historic buildings in Paris, France ,and attracting tourists from all over the world. The building has been under construction, and CNN reports that authorities are still unsure of how the fire was started.
This fire is not only devastating to Paris residents, but is a huge hit to one of the city's most beloved sights and historic buildings. So, even if you're not located in Paris, there are still a few ways you can help this church get back on its feet and show your love for its history.

Built in the 13th century, Notre Dame is one of Paris' oldest religious buildings. However, centuries of snow and rain weakened the building's infrastructure, and this fire has devastated the church even more. So, consider making a donation to the Notre Dame Cathedral by purchasing a candle on their website.
As this fire engulfs the cathedral, raising money has never been so important. Even if it's just a small donation, any dollar (or euro) will help.

There's a strong chance that the Notre Dame building will never be the same after this blaze. For those of you who were lucky enough to see this historic sight for yourself before the fire, share a photo you've taken of the cathedral to Wikimedia Commons as a way to preserve the Notre Dame's incredible legacy. Wikimedia Commons is a media platform that helps power Wikipedia, and it's extremely simple to contribute to.
First, create an account on Wikimedia Commons website and upload a photo that falls in the platform's guidelines (it has to be your own personal photo). Then, take a few moments to describe the photo you've submitted, click next, and you're finished.
Notre Dame is one of the most historic buildings in the world and deserves to be celebrated, so take a few moments to share its incredible history.
