Neighbours of the incestuous half brother and sister who murdered two of their children suspected they were a couple when the youngest kids called him 'dad', MailOnline can reveal.
Sarah Barrass and Brandon Machin had a carefully constructed back story to mask the shocking truth that they were lovers and that he had fathered her six children.
But neighbours in the road where Machin claimed to be bringing up her children as a single mother were suspicious of the amount of time her 'brother' was spending at the property.

Their suspicions grew when Machin would make a show of leaving the house at night, only to sneak back in under the cover of darkness.
The evil pair were jailed for 35 years yesterday for strangling their son Tristan, 13, in front of 14-year-old Blake before killing him as social services edged toward rescuing them from their chaotic home life in Sheffield.

After the 12-minute murder spree they attempted to drown a third child in the bath and planned to kill the other three using drugs overdoses, two of whom were under three years of age, but Barrass then called the police.
The horrific case raises major questions about who knew the truth about their relationship and how they kept an illegal sexual relationship secret despite being on the radar of social services since the 1990s.
Neighbours said today that people in the street knew of the relationship taking place under the noses of Sheffield City Council, who has launched a serious case review.
One told MailOnline: 'When Sarah first moved into the house she only had the four eldest children and Brandon appeared on the scene straight away.
'She was at pains to point out to everyone that she was a single mother and had four kids to look after and introduced him to everyone as her brother.
'That was accepted at first even though it seemed strange he spent so much time at the house with her and the kids when there didn't seem to be any need for him to be there.

Neighbours at Machin's flat - a 13 minute drive across Sheffield from Barrass's semi-detached property in Sheffield say he was rarely there as he would often spend many nights away
'She had two more children and yet there was no sign of a father and no explanation for how the little ones came to be conceived. The only man who was ever seen at the house was her brother.
'My suspicions really started when I would watch him leave the house and shout goodbye, he'd see them in the morning.
'I'm a light sleeper and would notice that a while after leaving he'd come back when it was dark having walked around the block. He was sneaking back in when he thought no one would see.
'It seemed really strange and I didn't know what to think. Your mind looks for answers but they're too strange to dwell on.
'Then after the younger children were born and could talk they'd slip up and call him 'Dad.'

'I heard it once when the children were leaving the house to go somewhere and I heard a little voice call 'bye Mum, bye Dad.' One of the older children shushed the young one and said not to say that.
'It confirmed to me at least that something was off, but I don't think anyone could really have imagined the situation that was going on in there.'
People in the street of three bedroom semis, close to a primary school, are reeling at the details revealed at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.
Another neighbour said: 'The house is boarded up and a constant reminder about what happened to those poor children, ideally it should be pulled down, no one will ever want to live there.'
Machin's flat on the city's Burngreave Road is a 13 minute drive away from Barrass's semi.
Barrass and Machin grew up in a chaotic household where their had a number of partners, some of whom abused Barrass, the court was told.
The children were dirty, dishevelled and had skin ailments such as dermatitis from living in squalid conditions and there being not enough beds for all the family to sleep on.

Police forensic teams work at the three bed home where Barrass murdered two of her children earlier this year. She had told police that Michan had killed them, but both have been jailed
Barrass and her sister would sleep on sofas in rooms soiled by dog faeces.
A former neighbour at the house, also in Shiregreen, recalled the horrific conditions Machin and Barrass were brought up in, saying: 'There was s*** all over, literally s*** and the children would be left all day without food.'
Bryan Cox, QC, for Barrass told the court on Tuesday of the findings made by psychologists on her family life at home in the 1990s.

He said: 'The children were left in effect to look after themselves without adequate food, clothing, furniture or bedding whilst their mother drank excessively and had a series of partners, some of whom abused the defendant. (Barrass)'
Barrass and Machine's younger brother Martyn Barrass has claimed that he informed social services about the couple's twisted relationship as far back as 2009, but nothing was done.
The former home of the pair's mother was being gutted by workmen yesterday, with fixtures and fitting being removed to be replaced.
A neighbour said: 'She moved a few months ago, we wondered whether it was for her own safety after what happened.'
Sheffield City Council were unable to comment on the move.
The council spokeswoman said the authority was unable to comment further on how much their social services department was aware of whilst the serious case review is underway.
She said: 'A great deal of time and energy is being put into the review of this tragic case to look into whether there are any lessons that could be learnt from it. It's important to take the time to get this right and it wouldn't be appropriate comment further at this stage.'

The wretched and incestuous half-siblings who murdered two of their own children and tried to kill four more loved stamping childhood pets to death and began having sex as teenagers after he was taken from their mother into care, it was revealed today.
Sarah Barrass, 35, and Brandon Machin, 39, were jailed for 35 years yesterday for strangling their son Tristan, 13, in front of 14-year-old Blake before killing him as social services edged toward rescuing them from their chaotic home life in Sheffield.
Today the couple's younger brother Martyn - who shares the same mother - said they were 'evil from birth' and would love stamping on pet mice together as children and bingeing on gory horror films such as Nightmare on Elm Street.
Martyn, who spoke to social services 10 years before the boys' murder, said: 'Those two have been evil since birth. They are both as bad as each other, they are both murdering, evil psychopaths'.
He added: 'They loved killing things and inflicting pain. We had mice. I walked in and Brandon and Sarah were laughing, chasing the mice – stamping on them, killing them. I tried to push them away but they were too strong'.

Martyn Barrass, their younger brothers, says they were evil from birth and would kill pets for fun and shared a morbid fascination with horror films
The couple were separated as teenagers when Machin was taken away from their mother aged 14 - but began having sex when he left the care system when Barrass was around 16.
They maintained a long-term relationship spanning almost 20 years and producing six 'planned' children, who were told he was an attentive uncle and forced to accept the extraordinary claim a fictitious father was a hero who died fighting in the Second World War more than 70 years ago.
Barrass and Machin had three other half-siblings, who shared the same mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, but had different fathers, and initially grew up together in Sheffield.
Their younger brother Martyn appears to be the only close relative to leave Sheffield, living with his partner and twins on Merseyside. Their younger sister Donna died tragically aged 19. Another sister still lives in the Steel City.
Martyn spoke to social services about the safety of his sister's children - but it is not known if he raised any concerns about the relationship.
He told the Mirror: 'I witnessed Brandon's violence towards Blake years ago and I knew something wasn't right. I visited them when Tristan was still in his pushchair and Blake was only a toddler – he must have been three or four.
'We were out walking when Brandon grabbed Blake's arm really roughly and dragged him across the floor.
'It was enough to know something wasn't right, so I called social services and asked them to look into it. If they had, the boys might still be here today'.

Their mother, who still lives in Sheffield, cannot be named to avoid identifying their surviving children.
Her Facebook page has also been flooded with abusive messages from people suggesting she bears some responsibility because of their childhood she gave her own children.
But some were taken into care and others stayed with the mum in dysfunctional circumstances raised in court by their legal team.
The illicit couple would binge-watch horror films together and revelled in the gore.
Terrible emotional toll on surviving children who were made to believe their dad died in WW2
In statements read to the court, the anguish suffered by the two eldest surviving children of Sarah Barrass was laid bare.
Miss Melly said their social worker revealed: 'One of them said (they were) worried (they) would become a murderer when (they were) older because that is what his mum and Brandon did.
'(They are) emotionally broken and don't know why this happened. They both want to know why and how.'
She revealed one of the other surviving children 'punches a big teddy bear to vent their frustration.'
The court heard the oldest surviving children wanted their parents to go to prison for '300 years'.
A social worker said: 'Both (the older children) are emotionally broken and don't know why this happened.
'They repeatedly ask why and how. We don't have the answers.
'The (older children) are very much confused and don't know why this happened.'
In a victim impact statement, one of the children who almost died in the bath described how both defendants tried to drown them and how they had to 'fight them off'.
The child 'doesn't like baths anymore', a court heard.
The children are now being looked after by social services. A council worker said: 'They are safe and receiving good support through this traumatic time.'
Just ten months before she committed the heinous crimes, Barrass made chilling posts on Facebook about murder.
She posted a quote from a Stephen King novel which read: 'Murder is like potato chips; You can't stop with just one'.
She also shared a grizzly Grim Reaper photo with the caption: 'Coming for you'.
Barrass plotted to kill her children as threat loomed of them being taken into care because of their home like.
Miss Melly said the mother-of-six sent a message to a friend, in which she said: 'I've thought of every possible solution to this mess. Mass murder, putting them all in care, checking in to the local nut house.
She added: 'I love my kids too much to kill them, I can't put them into care for the same reason.'
Bryan Cox QC, mitigating for Barrass, said she was 'profoundly damaged by her childhood'.
Barrass was in a long-term relationship with her half-brother Brandon Machin, 39, who was the father of all six children.
Together the couple attempted to kill four of them with an overdose of pills. When that didn't work they strangled the oldest two – Blake, 14, and Tristan, 13 – and tied bin bags over their heads.
They attempted to drown a third child in the bath and planned to kill the other three, two of whom were under three years of age.
After murdering the teenage boys Barrass is said to have come to her senses and contacted police.
She told officers that Blake came into the room when she was strangling his brother. He was then attacked by Machin. The oldest surviving children told a social worker they wanted their parents to go to prison for '300 years'. They had believed their father was dead and thought Machin was simply an uncle, the court heard.

Barrass and Machin admitted multiple murder, conspiracy to murder and attempted murder charges in September.

Sarah Barrass posted: 'Murder is like potato chips; You can't stop with just one'
At Sheffield Crown Court yesterday they were jailed for life with a minimum of 35 years.
The shocking case raises serious questions about the role of social workers who failed to take the children into care in time.
Officials first became concerned about the relationship between Barrass and Machin 21 years ago when she was 14.
Just two days before the murders, social workers in Sheffield raised the level of scrutiny on the family. Tragically, this acted as a catalyst for the appalling crimes.
Before the sentencing hearing another sibling, 34-year-old Martyn Barrass, said: 'Social services have been aware of our family since before Sarah had kids.
'They don't seem to have done the job they could have done or should have done. That's what I'm struggling to understand. The main people to blame are Sarah and Brandon. But social services could have prevented it, could have stopped it. This will haunt us for ever.'

The paternity of the children was allegedly a secret and the murder plan was put into action on May 23 when Barrass feared a social worker was about to uncover the truth and put all the children into care.
A timeline of Sarah Barrass and Brandon Machin's murder plot
Sarah Barrass and Brandon Machin both pleaded guilty to murder today, below is a timeline of how their plot unfolded.
May 14 and May 20: According to the charges, the pair discussed and plotted the murders over six days
May 24: Ten days after first devising their plot, the pair kill Tristan and Blake Barrass
July: An inquest into the death of the two children was opened and adjourned
August 8: The two boys are remembered at the Grenoside Crematorium
September 27: Barrass and Machin plead guilty to murder and conspiracy to murder
November 12: Incestuous couple jailed for life and will each serve a minimum of 35 years

The court heard she had herself been put into care as a child and suffered traumatic abuse within her family. Her mother was a drunk and she lived with her children in appalling conditions. Social services were closely involved from when Barrass was just six years old.
Passing sentence, Mr Justice James Goss said Barrass and Machin had been in a consensual incestuous relationship and the pregnancies were planned.
After the case, John Macilwraith, executive director of people services at Sheffield City Council, said a serious case review would be held.
He added: 'This is such a tragic and, we hope, isolated case that it is vital to examine every aspect in order to establish what can be learned.'
A family friend has described outside court how Tristan and Blake Barrass were 'beautiful, confident and outgoing boys who both had a bright future ahead of them'.
Matthew Saunders said that a 'piece of all our hearts died' when the two teenagers were murdered by their parents Sarah Barrass, 35, and her 39-year-old half-brother Brandon Machin.
He said of the two children: 'Blake and Tristan leave a huge empty void in all our lives, and we did not get the chance to say goodbye.
'We are relieved justice has been served, but it should never have come to this.'
Mr Saunders added: 'Blake and Tristan were two beautiful, confident and outgoing boys, who both had a bright future ahead of them.
'We cannot put into words the pain and emptiness we feel, but we find some comfort in knowing Blake and Tristan will always be remembered, and how loved both boys were.'
The friend also thanked the emergency services who attended on the day that Tristan and Blake died.
Standing outside court following the sentencing, Edmund Hulbert, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'This was an appalling crime in which two young lives were lost, and a family torn apart, leaving a community in shock.

'Two of the surviving children witnessed their older siblings being attacked and the trauma that all the children have experienced, and will continue to experience, is unimaginable.
'It is paramount now that the surviving children are allowed to rebuild their lives in peace.'
Chief Superintendent Stuart Barton, from South Yorkshire Police, thanked the officers who had been involved in investigating the case.
He added: 'Incidents like this are, fortunately, very rare. Sheffield is a place where we look after each other, we care for each other and the community is at our heart.'
John Macilwraith, the executive director of people services at Sheffield City Council, said the Sheffield Children Safeguarding Partnership has initiated a serious case review into events at the home in Sheffield.
He said: 'This is such a tragic and, we hope, isolated case that it is vital to examine every aspect in order to establish what can be learned to inform the development of future professional practice.'

A couple in an incestuous relationship who murdered their two teenage sons and tried to kill their remaining four children have been jailed for life.
Sarah Barrass, 35, and her partner, Brandon Machin, 39, who is also her half-brother, planned to kill their six children amid fears they would be taken into care. They were both sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison with a minimum term of 35 years.
Tristan and Blake Barrass, aged 13 and 14 respectively, died after being strangled by the pair at a property in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield on 24 May.

A court heard that, prior to the killings, Barrass and Machin had given their four eldest “terrified” children tablets used to treat ADHD against their will. When the tablets did not work, Barrass – who declared: “I gave them life. I can take it away” – searched online for other ways to kill her children, including suffocation, strangulation and drowning.

The court was told Barrass then strangled Tristan with her dressing gown cord and Machin then strangled Blake with his hands.

The pair also tried to kill one of the younger children by attempting to drown them in a bath.

Barrass and Machin had each admitted two counts of murder, conspiracy to murder six children, and five counts of attempted murder.

In sentencing, Mr Justice Goss told Barrass: “You considered [that] your love for them and fear of being parted from them entitled you to take their lives as well as your own.”

The prosecutor, Kama Melly, told Sheffield crown court that Machin was Barrass’s half-brother – both had the same mother – but the pair had a sexual relationship.

She said: “The six children lived alone with their mother, Sarah Barrass. The picture of the Sarah Barrass household prior to the events in 2019 was, to the outside world, a household of a loving single mum with six children, heavily supported by her brother Brandon Machin.

“In fact, unbeknown to everyone but the defendants, Brandon Machin was in a sexual relationship with his half-sister Sarah Barrass, and he was the father of all six children.

“The children believed and even told officers at the scene that their father was dead, having died in the second world war.”

On 23 May, the defendants gathered tablets from around Barrass’s home and divided them among the four eldest children, expecting them to die.

“None of the children wanted to take the tablets but were forced to do so,” she said.

The court heard that Barrass sent messages and made “light-hearted” social media posts overnight claiming that the children had a sickness bug.

Melly added: “They decided the children were better off dead than in care.” After strangling the boys, the pair then “placed bin bags over their heads to ensure their certain death”.

After the murders and the attempted murder of the younger child who was placed in a bath, the mother took the surviving children, who are all under 13, to the bedroom and phoned the police.

Melly said: “Nothing could have prepared those two police constables for the scene they had found.

“The officers found Sarah Barrass barricaded in a room with the four surviving children. She lied to the officers, telling them that her two other children were with neighbours.

“However whilst she was saying this to police, one of the children motioned to the police officer that in fact the children were dead – he moved his hand across his throat. Sarah Barrass told the child to stop what he was doing and stated: ‘Stop, don’t say that.’”

Despite vomiting and having hallucinations, the younger children survived the attempt to kill them and recovered in intensive care. The two youngest surviving children were under three.

The court heard how Barrass had asked the local authority for help with the children, and had texted a friend to say: “I’ve thought of every possible solution to this mess. Mass murder, putting them all in care, checking into the local nut house.

“I love my kids too much to kill them. I can’t put them into care for the same reason.”

In her defence, Bryan Cox QC admitted Barrass’s crimes were “nothing but evil”, but added that she was “profoundly damaged by her childhood”.

The court was told that Barrass had grown up in a home where she had suffered neglect and emotional, physical and sexual abuse, eventually being taken into care.
