SINGAPORE: This year's Chingay Parade, which will kick off on Friday, promises to be an international affair.

The overseas performers hail from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and even Germany and Denmark.

On Thursday, they were hard at work practising for the big show.

Some foreign participants are taking part in the parade for the first time.

Danish gymnast, Stefan Graversen, said: "It's our first time in the parade. So we're looking forward to it a lot. We're going to move a mat and then jump on it. And then the girls are.....going to show Danish gymnastics."

Other first-timers in the parade include a Sri Lankan group.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Jayathri Samarakone, said: "When I came to Singapore two years ago, I really thought I should get the Sri Lankan performers to participate in Chingay. And I'm really very honoured and happy today that 40 participants from Sri Lanka are taking part."

The Chingay Parade will be held over two days (11-12 February) at the Pit Building (next to the Singapore Flyer).

Will it be as noisy as Thaipusam:confused:

PAP is so silly, instead of hyping a traditional festival like Thaipusam. They are busy spending $$$ on an "international Chingay Parade"

Of course Chingay Parade must go international cause too many FT in singapore . i bet , many of the performers are FT .

My guess Chingay Parade goes international because they are setting new target for tourists visit, that mean more $$$ flowing in but I hope they are not making our local doing it for free, like students .

The commercialisation of a local culture. Singapore national Day Parade will go international next.

what about LKY birthday ? will it go international ? :D

When he dies, it will be commercialised too. You must pay to visit his grave. If you want to pee at his tomb, there will be an extra levy.

I don't mind paying to pee at his tomb. I will make sure to hold my pee for 2 days before that.

No foreigners want to visit, he not Mao Zedong or Chiang Kai Shek. :D

for 2ml of urine , you just pay for the entry fee . above 2ml of urine , every 1ml you pay $50 :D:D

Fuck man. Chingay mean the performer must play with the BIG bamboo flag. THAT is Chingay. Nowaday Chingay become a joke. Who in charge of Chingay does not know what is Chingay. This "Chingay" show got no more culture or identity to Singapore. It is just another international parade that can happen anywhere in any city in the world. No value.
