Chinese police have escorted 1,178 Chinese nationals suspected of telecom fraud in Myawaddy, Myanmar, back to China, the Ministry of Public Security said on Monday (Dec 8).

The joint crackdown by China, Myanmar and Thailand follows what authorities called a severe telecom fraud situation targeting Chinese citizens in Myawaddy.

The ministry said the operation is a key outcome of the Nov 14 ministerial meeting on combating telecom and online fraud, attended by officials from China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Myanmar authorities aim to demonstrate sincerity towards China to secure its support and counter potential influence from the US. With an upcoming election, they are also seeking China's backing. They need to address telecom fraud and extradite the Chinese suspects to China.
