The cantonese we hear nowadays was the official langague in canton in the past, so old time people speak their own dialect at home but speak cantonese when they go to the provincial capital on business.

My parents are able to communicate in more languages including Japanese and a few Chinese dialects than I am. I am only fluent in English and Singlish. A little bit of Hokkien and Malay, and a few words in Cantonese. I suppose I am quite happy to settle for this, and good thing that most people I deal officially with use English. No interest to relocate to China.

I get by with English. Even when I communicate with associates from PRC, we use English. My supervisor at my work in Canada is from Fujian, and he spoke English. He is unable to speak Hokkien. A few times a year I travel to China where delegates from all over Asia like Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Oz and New Zealand gather, and we communicate in English. It helps if one is able to speak many languages, but if one is like me who is able to only effectively communicate in one language, let that language be English.

I have no enemies.

yes but it matters cause u have to know what type of chinese u are and whose the enemy,as far as i know im a southerner so northerners are the enemy,and any tiong that doesnt speak dialect are the enemy doesnt matter which dialect....thats basically 95% of tiongs in singapore....i only met a handful of tiongs that could speak dialect,i suspect they originate from fujian,guangdong and other places where native singaporeans came from.

what i meant was that majority of ABCs are taishanese, around 70%. So you lucky he spoke cantonese instead of taishanese. at least can catch a bit.

In the US english is established as the de facto language for communication of everyone living in the states. There are many ppl in the states that cannot speak english like some mexicans etc and they aren't looked upon too fondly. Anyway it's the same in china in that the defacto language for communication is mandarin. Yes mandarin originated from the north of china not the south. It's the same with english in that it originated from a small island but is now used worldwide.

Do you know the in the EU they use english as a standard means of communication. Yes some regions use german, french etc but at the end of the day it's english that most citizens of the EU use to communicate with citizens from another country of the EU.

I am curious though why does it seem there aren't too many ppl offended at english compared to mandarin. Other than the french i don't hear a german going why should we use english?
