LONDON – The Nobel laureate Robert Mundell once said, “great powers have great currencies.” China, whose government Mundell long advised, seemed to take this notion to heart, prodding the International Monetary Fund for years to add the renminbi to the basket of currencies that determine the value of the IMF’s reserve asset, the Special Drawing Right (SDR). And now the IMF has decided to do just that, in what amounts to a huge vote of confidence in China’s capacity to play a major role in international finance.

China was a great power before. And their currency widely circulated. But that did not stop the northern barbarians from invading and colonized the country.

as a chinese, i am proud of china's achievement. they have come a long way from world war 2, civil war and cultural revolution.

Haha that's a good joke.

I want to see China fail. I would love nothing more than to see China get ripped apart by internal conflict due to the wealth gap, and to see the inner regions grow in power and pose a serious threat to Beijing. When that happens, I will be the happiest man on Earth.

I hope history repeats itself.

No civilization, no matter how great, lasts forever. Moreover the Han people – having the world's oldest civilization – have always been mercantilistic, more interested in trading and making money than fighting wars. That's why the Chinese empire was the most expansionistic under the rule of the Mongols (Yuan) and Qing (Manchus).

Barbarians wil always be barbarians. By the way, the Mongols had the world's largest land empire, dwarfing the Romans.

Why???

A destabilized and ruined China will cause a chain reaction to the rest of the world, starting in Asia. Everyone will be worse off!!!

Cheers!

The way China does things may not be with finesse and elegance, bet one thing for sure, every Chinaman (and woman) does not want to relive the last two centuries of poverty, chaose, and desperation. They've suffered and been hunliated so badly, and every Chinese student is taught this in their education. We (I take it, you too) may not feel this as we are not mainlanders, but they PRCs are fiercely proud of their culture and the motherland (to the point of being ethnocentric). W can be sure that China will not allow herself to be bullied again by foreighners as she had during the Opium Wars and subsequent World Wars by other countries.

Cheers!

All fake goods manufacturers are financed, nurtured, subsidized under the table by the Chinese Govt. because it helps them two ways - one, it gets them revenue big time and helps them in their grand scheme of dominating the market and wiping out the original branded manufacturers - leading them to ruins.

If you have read enough history you will find that all southern civilisations would rule through trade and culture; and the northern civilisations will rule through military might. This is just geography at play.

Thoughout the 5000 years of recorded history, China's dynastic changes always started from the north (except twice they started from the south - Ming and Republic).

The main point is China has always withstood regime changes, purges, genocides etc... and survived til this day. The same can't be said for many other ancient civilisations..

how could Chinese govt helps if the greedy western countries do not move their
manufacturing plants to china ?

only sillypootians know that china is a copy cat
and those westerners are completely in the dark ?

the westerners are so foolish that they allowed the Chinese
to dominate the market ?/

chancellor Angela Merkel insisted on allowing terrorists into Germany
despite protests and demonstrations by its citizens.
Merkel is stupid or what ?
allowing the terrorists to rape her own kind , providing food and shelters
and knowing full well that in 100 years time
german will be overrun by these "refugees" she now welcome with open arms.

it is not strange that the majority of these "refugees" are young adults ?

A new world financial order is on the horizon .........
