All sound garang during election rallies and then chicken out when it's time to slug it out with the DPP. Now that the DPP and William Lai have pivoted to the KMT's area of non-independence and insisting that ROC de facto is good enough, it would probably benefit China more if the DPP can continue its rule.

Post-unification remains very challenging and if the 1C2S is to be operationalized, then strong local Taiwanese leadership is needed. The DPP might suck at geopolitics and day to day government administration, but they are actually pretty good thought and change management leaders. If the DPP can be nudged even more from the current light blue to dark blue political position through sticks + carrots, they make a better partner for the unification transition.

My conclusion is that China will never invade Taiwan as the cost is prohibitive and it will be a Macau, HK ,type of autonomous region with control over internal affairs and only foreign policy and military will be under central government. There are many examples in the world including the US territories of Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
