China has successfully landed a jet on its first aircraft carrier. The new J-15 fighter touched down on the Liaoning, refurbished Soviet-made ship which was delivered to the People's Liberation Army Navy in September - READ MORE http://on.rt.com/bo91fa

4/4.5th generation fighter at best

Airframe doesn't suggest stealth characteristics, looks more reminscent of a F-14/F-18 airframe. While it has some of the latest electronics China can provide, its weakness as suggested by some would be the very same China-made engines. Still it does show China's growing sea power ambition

China lands fighter jet on new carrier in show of force

SHANGHAI | Sun Nov 25, 2012 9:18am EST

(Reuters) - China has carried out its first successful landing of a fighter jet on its first aircraft carrier, state media said on Sunday, a symbolically significant development as Asian neighbors fret about the world's most populous country's military ambitions.

The home-built J-15 fighter jet took off from and landed on the Liaoning, a reconditioned Soviet-era vessel from Ukraine which only came into service in September this year.

China ushered in a new generation of leaders this month at the 18th Communist Party Congress in Beijing, with outgoing President Hu Jintao making a pointed reference to strengthening China's naval forces, protecting maritime interests and the need to "win local war".

China is embroiled in disputes with the Philippines and Vietnam over South China Sea islands believed to be surrounded by waters rich in natural gas. It has a similar dispute with Japan over islands in the East China Sea.

It has also warned the United States, with President Barack Obama's "pivot" to Asia, not to get involved.

"We should make active planning for the use of military forces in peacetime, expand and intensify military preparedness, and enhance the capability to accomplish a wide range of military tasks, the most important of which is to win local war in an information age," Hu said.

China has advertised its long-term military ambitions with shows of new hardware, including its first test flight of a stealth fighter jet in early 2011, an elite helicopter unit and the launch of the aircraft carrier.

China is boosting military spending by 11.2 percent this year, bringing official outlays on the People's Liberation Army to 670.3 billion yuan ($100 billion) for 2012, after a 12.7 percent increase last year and a near-unbroken string of double-digit rises across two decades.

Beijing's public budget is widely thought by foreign experts to undercount its real spending on military modernization, which has drawn repeated calls from the United States for China to share more about its intentions.

China's state-run Xinhua news portal said the J-15 - which can carry multi-type anti-ship, air-to-air, and air-to-ground missiles - is comparable to the Russian Su-33 jet and the U.S. F-18. It did not say when the landing on the carrier took place.

Better later than never right. At least they are playing catch up and making advances in high technology. Otherwise the West will walk all over them.

J-15 is a carbon copy of Russian Su-33 except with better avionics and weaponry. Improved domestically developed
engines, active electronically scanned array radar, radar absorbent material and an infra-red search and track system
enable the J-15 to match and/or exceed the aerodynamic capabilities of virtually all fighter aircraft currently operated
by regional militaries, with the exception of the US' F-22 Raptor.

The J-15 is also particularly good in an aerial dogfight, due to its maneuverability and high thrust-to-weight ratio, said
Kanwa Defense Review, a Canadian online magazine on defense affairs and weapon technology.

What is more interesting is the arresting gear on the Liaoning, which is one of the most sophisticated mechanical
instruments on aircraft carriers.

Only a handful of nations have the technology and ability to develop and manufacture arresting gear and none of them
will export such technology to other countries, defense industry insiders said, noting that the situation left China no
other choice but to develop the equipment itself.

Aiyoh u dont know much about aircraft. Is Su 27 copy which China called it J11 but for carrier called J15 Russia called it Su33.
So should no be not much issue. Since Russia already test it 20 year ago.

No i didnt followed the airpower development of our kawans that closely ever since i left SAF. Not bring paid to do so anymore

Will i get zapped for that from you?????

No! Will not ZAP u!
Just discussion and exchange point. Learn from each other.

Too be honest, I love to diss the PRC..but looking at the issues face by the F22 and JSF,,,I think the Commie planes got more bang for the buck than the USA over price equipment. The only way for the USA to win is to strike the chinese navy now,,,while it still has superiority,,but wait another 10 years,,china will give the USA more headaches,,also the USA planes like the Super Hornet,,performance not as good the the newer MIGs,,unless the USA have a drone aircraft carrier and can launch thousands of drones to overwhelm the CHinese..

but this is just my rant,,I hope the USA ups its game,,as there is a new rising superpower in town

The last thirty years, from bicycles and mao suits, to present high speed rails, manned space flights and aeroplanes, military and civilians. i'd say not bad.

Even the japs operated more aircraft carriers seven decades ago. What will the chinks demo next? Milk powder safe for human consumption?

With money any country also can operated Carrier. Just that can they sustain with the high cost maintenance/operation/support................

U cant really compare like that lah,,that time planes were cheaper, aircraft carrier cheaper,,now its a very sophisticated piece of hardware and planes etc heavier than before,,if want to build ww2 air craft carrier for ww2 air craft,,china can produce 1 a month easily ,,,

The carrier must operate as a system with support ships, destroyers, subs etc. not so simple to project marine power. Secured communication and coordination is a big problem. I'm sure the USA can quite easily disrupt this primitive chink battle group.

There is also requirement for support bases around the world. Now that they have essentially pissed off so many neighboring countries, how to sail beyond South China Sea? So the furthest this chink carrier can go is to berth at sinkieland marina south terminal for photo ops.

Their quality sucks. I'm sure a lot of corners were cut. They don't have culture of following procedures, and you can be assured of many accidents and deaths on board.

Actually parity is a good thing for the world. The most peaceful period in the 20th century in terms of number of international conflicts and wars was, ironically, the Cold War standoff between the NATO allies and the Soviet bloc.

History has shown that whenever one power outstripped the rest of the world in military and economic might, it was an open invitation to a unilateral expansionist adventure and empire-building.

And of all the major powers ancient and modern, the Middle Kingdom has always been the most inward-looking and the least expansionist. A superpower China would be a much better counterweight to the US than say, a revitalized Russia or a re-militarized Japan.

The Middle Kingdom was kept inward looking largely because of internal wars and there was more than sufficient resources internally for the population.

However, now that the country has huge population, is unified and needs huge amount of resources from overseas, they may not be pacifists any longer.

Chinese are playing smart and using this old Soviet hulk to learn the operating dynamics of a carrier. These guys have to start from scratch and smartest thing they did was to buy this old carrier. It does not matter who copies who. What matters is to flatten the learning curve and put out a credible carrier/ aircraft/jet engine within the next 10 years. US missile technology or even NASA putting man on moon was based on WW2 Nazi research. After WW2, half of the german engineers went to USSR and the other went to US. So in effect, US was copying German design.

What Chinese have on their side is their huge economy/GDP, industrial complex, $$$ and determination and engineers. I look around and I do not see lack of smart Chinese engineers. So now they copy then they make improvements and in the future come out with their own technology.
