TWO Malaysian friends who were both in their 30s and lived in the same low-cost apartment block also shared a dark secret - they were both sexual predators who preyed on young girls.

Dubbed the 'Beasts of Ampang' by the Malaysian press, the men were arrested for a series of rapes against at least five girls aged between 12and 15.

The victims lived in different blocks in the same Ampang, Selangor apartment complex as their attackers.

One of the rapists was a hawker who sold burgers for a living and had two young daughters, while the other was a single tow-truck driver and lived with his sister.

The hawker would linger outside two neighbourhood secondary schools and befriend the schoolgirls, reported the Malay Mail.

'Charming'

He was described by his victims as charming and trustworthy.

He would then take them for a meal and a ride before bringing them home and raping them.

The tow-truck driver found and raped his victims using the same modus operandi. The rapes took place over the past month.

The two rapists operated alone, although they would often swap victims. They would also pay their victims between RM50 (S$20) and RM300 to keep mum.

Police arrested the rapists following a tip-off.

Ampang police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Jalil Hassan said several items from the rapists' apartments were seized. These included blankets, towels, bedsheets and mobile phones. Traces of semen were found on one of the towels and the items would be handed to the toxicology department.

A police source told the Malay Mail: "We took relevant items from the apartment. It could take a month before we get the results of those tests."

Mr Abdul Jalil said the victims have been sent to hospital for check-ups.

Victims identified the rapists from a police line-up last week and more arrests might follow if investigations showed that others were involved.

Meanwhile, a rape investigation in Klang, Selangor, has uncovered a paedophile.

The suspect, 26, is described as good-looking. He had rented a room in an apartment and is said to have raped the 14-year-old niece of the landlord who had just arrived from Perak.

The Star reported that the victim claimed that the man had molested her and asked for sex before raping her in the living room.

Police searching through the room of an alleged rapist found two sports bags containing panties of various sizes, colours and brands and a photo album of naked young girls.

District criminal investigation department chief Deputy Superintendent Ruslan Ibrahim confirmed the arrest and seizure of the panties and album, but declined to elaborate further.

However, sources told the New Straits Times the photographs included naked pictures of young girls and some where the alleged paedophile was having sex with the girls. The photographs may have been taken with a mobile phone.

The panties were in children and adult sizes and investigations are underway to find out whether they were stolen or given by girls and women he may have raped or had sex with.

The rape victim related the crime to her cousin three days later after the cousin found her underwear missing. The victim said she was too afraid to tell anyone else about the incident as her attacker might hurt her.

A police spokesman said the suspect, who works at a publishing company in Shah Alam, was arrested after midnight on Thursday.

The girl has been taken to a hospital for a medical examination and the suspect has been remanded.
