SINGAPORE - Two men have been arrested for two attempted robberies over consecutive days, while another two men were also nabbed for their alleged involvement in one of these attempts.
In a statement on May 29, the police said the suspects are between the ages of 17 and 19.
In the afternoon of May 28, the police were alerted to a call for assistance at Block 432 Clementi Avenue 3. Two men had allegedly attempted to rob a victim, who had listed a luxury watch for sale on online marketplace Carousell and intended to meet a potential buyer at the HDB block.
One of the men was armed with a knife and allegedly attempted to cover the victim’s head with a plastic bag, said the police. The victim escaped and called the police.
Investigations revealed that the men were part of a group of four that allegedly tried to rob another victim a day earlier on May 27, also under the guise of buying a luxury watch from Carousell.
The meeting was supposed to take place at the same HDB block, said the police. However, the victim grew suspicious of the circumstances of the meeting after arriving and left before he could be robbed.
The four men were arrested on May 28. The knife, which had earlier been discarded by the men, was recovered by the police.
The two men involved in the incident on May 28 will be charged in court on May 30 with attempted armed robbery. If found guilty, they could be jailed for between two and seven years and given at least 12 strokes of the cane.
One of the men involved in the incident on May 27 will be charged in court with attempted robbery, while the other man will be investigated for being part of a criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, said the police.
“Members of the public who encounter such cases are advised to remain calm, take note of the physical appearance and distinctive features of the perpetrator, and call for the police as soon as possible,” said the authorities.
They also urged the public to be alert and attentive to their surroundings when meeting potential buyers or sellers, and especially so if they are carrying valuables or large sums of cash.
