THE Singapore People's Party (SPP) led by Mr Chiam See Tong has set up a disciplinary committee to investigate recent actions and remarks by the Potong Pasir MP's ex-protege Desmond Lim.
It will examine Mr Lim's refusal to abide by the party's decision last month to replace him as secretary-general of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), which Mr Chiam also chairs.
It is also expected to look into comments made by Mr Lim about talks between Mr Chiam, 75, and Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam, 51, over the latter's interest in joining the SDA.
The committee was set up at an SPP central executive committee (CEC) meeting last night which both Mr Chiam and Mr Lim attended.
The five-man disciplinary committee will be headed by CEC member R.N. Rai, sources told The Straits Times. If it finds that Mr Lim breached party rules, it can recommend that the CEC suspend, expel or demote him. According to the party constitution, an expelled member can appeal to the CEC, or to members at an ordinary party conference.
When contacted last night, Mr Lim, 42, declined to comment and directed queries to Mr Chiam. The opposition veteran could not be reached for comment about the disciplinary committee.
