Therefore, government control of the press, by its own argument, cannot be unlimited. To the extent that government control interferes with the role of the press in connecting candidates to voters, the democratic justification for that control is weakened. True, nobody elected the press, but if this important democratic institution is seriously undermined, the government can’t claim to be freely and fairly elected either.

By treating alternatives as less newsworthy because there is so little chance of these alternatives becoming reality, is there not a danger of journalism being biased for the status quo and contributing to a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Absolutely. This is why, as a vital supplement to mainstream journalism, we should value alternative media, including partisan journalism, where what is today’s fringe is given the chance to flower into tomorrow's mainstream.

I would urge them to be transparent about it and to be ready to account for it. Gone are the days when the media could simply brush aside critics with stock phrases like “we stand by our coverage” when criticised. The public now demands greater accountability from all establishment institutions, including the press.

This is what is known as abstract journalism and Cherian George is now a full time master at it. What a waste that after all these years, and having attended some of the best schools in the world, a man with such great potential has ended up doing this.

Abstract journalism first appeared in Washington where one writes seemingly critical op- ed articles that are high brow, gives an impression of being neutral and powerful yet it does nothing in terms of educating or swaying the man on the street. The idea is to hold on to the press pass to the white house and still get to take pictures with President for the family album.

The trick to this is not to quote any real examples, events or incidents that support the broad stroked criticism. Even when such examples are littered all around you.

Compare this with articles written by Alex Au and the likes.

The man is now in the same aircon room oblivious and reassured.
