UMNO sacks former Malaysian DPM Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir

Posted 24 Jun 2016 19:03

SINGAPORE: The supreme council of Malaysia's ruling UMNO party has unanimously agreed on Friday (Jun 24) to sack former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah chief minister Mukhriz Mahathir, son of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Both have been tough critics of party president, Prime Minister Najib Razak, calling for his resignation following allegations of graft and mismanagement at scandal-hit state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

In announcing the sacking of Mr Muhyiddin and Mr Mukhriz, Mr Najib noted that the two men, as well as UMNO Vice President Shafie Apdal had already been suspended over their criticism of the UMNO president. Mr Najib added that he needed more time to think about a possible cabinet reshuffle.

Mr Mukhriz's father, Dr Mahathir Mohamad quit UMNO in February saying he was "embarrassed" to be "associated with a party that is seen as supporting corruption".

Mr Najib added on Friday that the UMNO Supreme Council has also decided unanimously to stop all funding to Dr Mahathir's Perdana leadership foundation.

Separately, when asked about possible snap polls, Mr Najib was non-committal, only saying he was encouraged by victories for his ruling coalition in twin by-elections over the weekend.
