Opposition politician Chee raises S$30,000 to clear bankruptcy
By S Ramesh | Posted: 24 September 2012 1718 hrs

SINGAPORE: Opposition politician Chee Soon Juan has managed to raise the S$30,000 needed to annul his bankruptcy.

The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) said on its website on Monday that the Discharge CSJ Fund raise the money in a "record 10 days".

Dr Chee, who's Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), started his fund-raising drive after former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong agreed to accept the S$30,000 he had offered to annul his bankruptcy order.

The Discharge CSJ Fund website was set up to sell Dr Chee's latest book, Democratically Speaking, to raise the money and to appeal for donations.

Dr Chee said he'll make the necessary arrangements to remit the money to the Official Assignee this week.

He has signalled his intention to lead the SDP in the next general election, due in 2016.

Dr Chee was declared a bankrupt in 2006 for failing to pay S$500,000 in damages to Mr Lee and Mr Goh for defaming them during the 2001 General Election campaign.

Honestly, SDP is better at selling and marketing itself than any other opposition parties. Either one of the two things tend to happen:

1. People will find SDP more attractive and its attention will seek them more.

2. People will get ad-nauseum over any overselling or even selling, perceiving it to be self-boast. Some people might notice that in areas where the marketing fails, it is removed, hence they become put off. Eg. after election of the new CEC last year, the CEC page was removed, maybe because of the presence of Jufrie and Vincent Cheng as chairmen.

Hopefully he has learnt and not get into 3 cornered fights. I have a feeling he will be his own self again and give opposition a bad name and become a spoiler in the next election. Perhaps that is why MM and SM agreed to the relatively low $30K.

if that was true, how come they no win seats. wp is the one which markets itself best among them. the votes tell.

You are one political observer who sure truly believe in the goodness of men,god bless.

Simple. Because that is not the only criteria of winning seats. Uncles like Tsingtao despite the fanciful marketing gimmicks by Heineken.

He is but one person and how many 3 corners can be create?

They just didn't get the right area so they didn't win. If WP dares switch Hougang/Aljuneid with SDP and let SDP contest in Hougang/Aljuneid, WP contest in Sembawang for example, SDP will win and WP lose. But if WP happens to win, then I would salute the WP, for they truly have the support of all Singapore.

Very smart. Let some body else fight the war and you come in to claim the spoils. Can SDP do any better than employing hyena tactics?

I think both the area and the party are part of the criteria. It is not either or. Even SPP lost the area that they have held onto for 28 years. Is it the problem with the area?

Indeed. To many brainwashed Sinkies, SDP is a puppet of Western democracts who are intent to destroy Singapore with things like human rights, equality, justice and freedom of expression. The blue PAP is the one that markets itself best.

If SDP didn't have good marketing they wouldn't get supporters, of which you are one, by doing half the work WP or others are doing.

SDP has supporters. Just that they are unable to reach out to the masses with their ideologies. How many Singaporeans give a damn fcuk about human rights, gay rights, abolishment of MDP?

There are two distinct ways opposition parties in Singapore work - engaging the people and engaging the PAP and in case of the CPT engaging the PM.

Agreed! Just look at the speakers in its version of the so-called National Conversation.

You have it backwards. It is WP that has been free-loading off the efforts of others and hitching a ride and others' expense. Let me give u an example. SDP has been the most active party after the 2006 elections after WP suddenly became silent and mute. They were the first to get onto the internet and generate increased awareness about the opposition and about the wrongs of the PAP. WP only woke up close to 2011 and they rode on the efforts created by others to win a GRC and an SMC. It was SDP and other activists who did the hard work of laying the groundwork so that others can benefit.

I must say, the PAPzis have done well in indoctrinating the masses. You just don't see such apathy among the other Chinese diasporas. The Hongkies, for instance, talk about human rights all the time.

Have to disagree bro.

SDP was the more prolific by miles in terms of public profile, presence, share of voice and visual in nearly all formats of media but did not play in the space that resonated with mainstream voters.

WP to many were too quiet, reticent even and should have done more having being in parliament for such a long time. When it came to 2011, the the shrewness of LTK came to the fore - they have been cautious but clever in getting the right people that resonate with voters such as CSM and Yee. They worked hard on their patch and they capitalised on the PAP's mistakes. They went for the GRC with their best slate - a gamble and won.

Look at SDP's version of National Conversation - its back to their usual formula. i now certain why the old man and GCT allowed him to come out of bankruptcy. None of the speakers except for VW and Paul would appeal to voters. Its a gathering of NGOs and champagne socialists. Look at the speeches made - pro democracy, human rights, rights of citizens etc. To the voters, these are the usual abstract terms.

SDP has to understand that they have to address the voters first to get the ticket. Not the PAP. I have no doubt that many are not pleased with WP as their primary objective seems to be to win seats and conduct meet the people sessions. And nothing more. My personal sense is that we need a much better political party than WP but it is not SDP.

I am now more certain after their National onversation that SDP will backslide and they will struggle to gain 30% as a party at the next GE. You watch, the MSM will give SDP maximum exposure at the GE because they and the establishment know that SDP messaging is wrong. The other opposition parties will suffer because of lesser exposure amd their messaging will not be effective. Mauruah's Election Media monitoring will be tickling along showing more than adequate exposure for opposition but content wise it will be a different amtter.

People like Teo Soh Lung, Samydorai, Kumaran, Alex, Andrew etc are not policians and will never be politicians. They are civil activists. They may wear their hesrts on heir sleeves, but they belong in pressure groups, niche issue groups, and within the NGO umbrella.

Constantly harping that other Political Parties boycotted the invitation for the 3 rd time in a row suggest that a hidden hand is manipulating the party for the establishment.

Then it has to be this way. SDP had been the most active in making the wrong noise that WP looked good and won. The question that maybe you the political guru can answer is this. Why other opposition parties like NSP didn't benefit from the powerful effect of the SDP's hardwork that smiles on everyone except themselves.
