A courier-services worker duped his friend's mother into handing over a gold necklace by promising to have it 'exchanged' for a newer one.
Instead of doing that, Rizal Hassan, 37, pawned the $4,000 necklace for $3,580 and then made himself scarce.
He pleaded guilty this week and was convicted on one count of criminal breach of trust.
He will be sentenced on Wednesday. His case was adjourned for a week to give him time to rustle up money to compensate Madam Ari Pah Jais, 62, for her loss.
He has so far made partial restitution of only $200.
