Cheapskate Singaporean don't want to pay more but yet ask thousand of questions to a PRC bus driver

Upset with the SBS / Trans Island hiring & training system

Last Tuesday morning, I boarded a SBS bus nearby Jalan Bt Merah & asked for confirmation of the directions. First, I am sorry to the other commuters on the bus as I delayed their schedules. But I am also as frustrated myself, cos of the driver.. He is a PRC Chinese guy in his 20s or 30s and could not understand my simple english of “Excuse me. Does this bus go to Alexandra Technopark ?” He said “Huh” a few times before I realised he doesn’t understand English. Then I repeated my question in Mandarin but the name of the place is still “Alexandra Technopark”. He still doesn’t get it. But he got smart, he took out the fare chart/ bus route map and I had to search for the name of the building myself. Anyway this already meant I paid my bus fare (as I already tapped my EZLink card when he drove off after his 1st “Huh”), EVEN IF this bus is taking me in the opposite direction.

011204_1190_0023I just wonder, why can’t these PRC drivers just hang a neck tag and say “Please only use Mandarin to communicate with me” or “I don’t understand a word of English” if they really have some communication barriers. Save us all the time !! And I haven’t even thought of, what if the bus is REALLY indeed taking me in the WRONG direction ?

I am just upset with the SBS / Trans Island hiring & training system. Isn’t it quite obvious that Singapore is bilingual ? Why are there drivers who don’t even know the English name of the buildings along the routes they are assigned to ? I am not against hiring PRC bus drivers, but at least they should be able to help with the directions !! Something so simple, yet seems like it can’t be attained.

Now, can I feedback this to the SBS bus service number so that this guy can be sent for basic english ?

If she(?) only bothers to do some research b4 she set out, she'll save himself a lot of trouble. here's how:

1. Go to www.onemap.sg. and click on it. A map opens.. Type the address "Alexandra technopark" and the map zooms in to put an arrow on it. Bus stops can be seen indicated along the roads. Click on the nearest bus stop in the right direction and a box opens showing the buses that ply along the route. Then go to sbstransit webpage and search for the bus service nr to get the exact route.

2. Or go to www.ptc.gov.sg and click on "Tools" to use their transitlink journey planner.

3. Or, this is a bit outdated but far more convenient for a first cut search, go to www.streetdirectory.com.sg and do the same as in (1). Click on the bus number and the actual route will be displayed.

That simple. I wonder why people live in Singapore and still are so blur.

A lot of drivers (young ones) and even taxi drivers are quite lost in S'pore. Let alone PRC bus drivers. can drive but don't know "lor sua". Probably this writer Aldina is also lost, for the better way when the other party doesnt know is to tell him it's near Pasir Panjang and Alexandra Rd junction. But alas! if you dont know lor sua, then hopeless lah..got to use the above methods. Can't expect people to know landmarks lah. Expect everybody to know every address you pop at them?
