Building demolition goes awry at Shenton Way

A large section of the former UIC building located at 5 Shenton Way collapsed onto a road today at about 4.30pm.

The building opposite the DBS building was being demolished when it collapsed, and the rubble spilled onto a nearby road.

One eyewitness told Stomp that there was a loud booming sound, and that the ground shook.

Photos contributed to the citizen journalism site also showed an excavator among the wreckage.

According to The Straits Times, a traffic controller from a nearby site, Mr Ripom Sutradhar, 25, said hacking work was being carried out at the site.

The driver of the excavator was questioned by police before being led away.

When approached by The Straits Times, he said he was unhurt in the accident.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call at about 4.44pm and deployed officers and vehicles to the scene, including Red Rhinos and ambulances.
