Cheap Short Term Stay in Melbourne

i'm going to melbourne with my wife from 19th September 2008 till 16th october 2008, to source for property to buy, as we're looking to emigrate there.

any advise on cheap accomodation, preferably with cooking facility ( to save on food costs ) and close to Melbourne CBD,to stay during this recce trip?

we're there on a mission to find a home to in a safe suburb to BUY ( Any reccomendations? I have in mind KEW, CAMBERWELL, CARLTON, BRUNSWICK, DOCKLANDS, SOUTHBANK, ETC BASICALLY WITHIN 10KM OF CBD OUTSKIRTS), so overpriced "holiday-style-accomodation" is last thing in our minds.

Most options we saw cost at least AU$100 per night. We're looking at somthing like AU$200-300 per WEEK, if at all available.

Any kind souls, pls kindly advise? thanks in advance!

Woo...Mate, those areas are bloody ex (at least for me). You must be loaded.

As for cheap accomodations with cooking facilities...Give http://www.wotif.com a go. Might not be the cheapest but at least give ya some ideas.

Try staying at Quest @ St Kilda. It is a serviced apartment complete with kitchen and the price should fit your budget. Also, it is just across the road from the Royal Botanic Gardens. And 15 mins walk to the St Kilda beach. There is also a secure carpark the tenants can use.

Would appreciate if you or anyone else can point me toward more budget friendly options, if any?

Those figures may state the daily rates, but you have to quote them as to the period that you will be staying for. I stayed in the Studio Twin Apartment at the Quest@St Kilda for 5 days and was charged only A$550. Does this info motivate you better? Do ask them via email for an offer.

But, matter of fact if you want cheaper rates, it's best to stay out of Melbourne city. Source for a motel, hotel or apartment in the suburbs where it is cheaper. And, best of all, you can see and experience for yourself what it is like for you when you stay there. Moreover, it is more convenient for you in your search for the best place to stay. Cheers!

Good luck with the house hunting. Btw, you have to have PR status in Australia in order to buy an established home or in Singapore speak, a "resale" home. You can still buy off the plan if you're not a PR. Saves you some money on stamp duty that way if you're able to buy from a developer.
