All 229 passengers got a shock early last Friday morning when the China Eastern Airlines plane they were on caught fire five minutes after take-off.
No one was hurt on Shanghai-bound flight MU568, which had left Singapore on schedule at 4.35pm.
Passengers on the flight told Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao that they could smell something burning even as the plane was getting ready to take off.
They then heard three loud bangs when the plane was in the air.
Eyewitnesses told Lianhe Wanbao that the sounds were followed by the strong smell of burning.
'I saw that the left wing of the plane was on fire and was spewing smoke,' a Mrs Huang told the newspaper.
'The pilot then told us the plane had run into trouble and needed to return to Changi Airport.'
The plane circled for about 20 minutes before making a safe descent at the airport, witnesses said.
On board were more than 100 Singaporeans, most of whom had signed up for tours with five travel agencies including SA Tours and Five Stars Tours, Lianhe Wanbao reported.
After landing, the passengers were rescheduled for a flight yesterday morning.
The Singaporeans on the flight were told to go home while foreign passengers were given a night's accommodation arranged by China Eastern Airlines, the report said.
All the passengers were given monetary compensation of more than $500, reported Lianhe Wanbao.
China Eastern Airlines confirmed the incident with Lianhe Wanbao.
When contacted yesterday by The Sunday Times, a spokesman for the Changi Airport Group declined to comment on the incident.
