Is the Real Risk From India Being Detected?
Out of self-interest, the rest of the world better help quickly to understand how a Covid variant is devastating the country.

If you haven’t heard of B.1.617 yet, chances are you soon will.

This particular Covid-19 variant is at least partly behind the overwhelming second wave in India, the current global epicenter of the pandemic. The World Health Organization has now raised B.1.617 from a “variant of interest” to a “variant of concern.” Authorities like Public Health England are already treating it as the latter, meaning there’s something worrying about one or more of the criteria on which a virus is judged — including how fast it transmits, how many it kills, and whether it evades detection or makes vaccines less effective.

The stakes underlying these threat thresholds have risen beyond guessing the true extent of the unfolding disaster in India. Whether daily fatalities and new cases are, as officially reported, around 4,000 and 400,000, respectively, or closer to 25,000 deaths and between 2 million and 5 million infections, as Brown University School of Public Health’s Ashish Jha estimates, the rest of the world needs to help the country combat this menace. Out of pure self-interest.

Of the many changes in the pathogen, the two of greatest concern affect a portion of the spike protein, called the receptor binding domain, that’s key to the virus getting into human cells. A new study has found that an entry driven by the B.1.617 spike protein was “partially resistant against neutralization by antibodies elicited upon infection or vaccination with the Comirnaty/BNT162b2 vaccine.” That’s the official name for the Pfizer-BioNTech shot. Although not in use in India, it’s one of the main lines of defense in developed countries.

att Hancock says he is “worried” about the Indian Covid variant amid reports it is becoming more prominent in Britain and spreads faster than the Kent mutation.
Scientists say that in England, in the two weeks to May 1, the proportion of Indian variant cases went from one per cent to 11 per cent of Covid-19 infections, with other variants less than one per cent.
“We are worried about the Indian variant,” the Health Secretary told Times Radio.

“You will have seen the very stringent measures that we have taken at the border.
“We have got enhanced tracking and tracing of all of those Indian variants that we see.

Public Health England has said that one version of the Indian mutation had been elevated to a “variant of concern”.
Scientists say B.1.617.2 appears to be spreading more quickly than two other identified subtypes of the Indian variant.

It comes as the World Health Organisation classified the variant as “of global concern”.
The WHO said as it confirmed the variant has spread to more than 30 countries.

United KingdomPublic Health England says coronavirus variant B.1.617.2 is a variant of concern

Public Health England said on Friday that coronavirus variant B.1.617.2, which was first identified in India, would be classified as a variant of concern due to evidence it was more transmissible.

It said that the other characteristics of the variant were still being investigated.

"There is currently insufficient evidence to indicate that any of the variants recently detected in India cause more severe disease or render the vaccines currently deployed any less effective," PHE said in a statement

LONDON (REUTERS) - British officials could declare one of the new coronavirus strains first found in India a "variant of concern", the BBC and Guardian reported on Friday (May 7), due to evidence that it spreads more quickly than the original version of the virus.

Scientists and doctors have recommended that one version of the variant first found in India, known as B16172, is designated a "variant of concern", as it appears to have been spreading more quickly in the United Kingdom than other variants, the BBC said.

The original variant in India, B1617, was first detected in October, but Public Health England (PHE) has categorised three different subtypes, all with slightly different mutations.

The sole unlinked case is another hospital worker - this time at Sengkang General Hospital.

He is a 33-year-old operating theatre nurse who had received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. He has preliminarily tested positive for the B1617 variant of the virus first identified in India.

WHAT IS THE B1617 VARIANT FROM INDIA?

The B1617 variant contains two key mutations to the outer "spike" portion of the virus that attaches to human cells, said senior Indian virologist Shahid Jameel.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the predominant lineage of B1617 was first identified in India last December, although an earlier version was spotted in October 2020.

On May 10, the WHO classified it as a "variant of concern", which also includes variants first detected in Britain, Brazil and South Africa. Some initial studies showed the B1617 variant from India spreads more easily.
