That episode in history is well documented, everybody knows it, both Chinese and Westeners. The lesson from that War? DO NOT isolate yourself from the world and get left behind.

Britain was able to defeat China (or rather, the Qing military) because they were technically superior and the Qing army was backward and outdated. Opium sparked the clash of cultures and the Brit (and some other) opium traders brought in cheap opium grown in their plantations from India (Patna and Benares). Prior to this, opium was already fashionable among the rich Chinese, when the traders brought them in, it became affordable to every Ah Seng, Ah Meng and Ah Heng. China was too vast for the invading armies to conquer all and so only consolidated their activities to the populated cities, much of the rest of China remained untouched. China learned an expensive and painful lesson from that and has struggled very hard to be out front again, which they are gaining ground. The world has changed a lot since then and things have gotten better (much better) especially after WW2. It's time to move on.

The events before and leading to the Opium War showed China to be aloof and not interested to trade with the "barbarians." The Chinese didn't need anything from the outsiders whilst the British wanted tea and porcelain. The British captain that led the first group into Beijing to meet the emperor was instead made to "kowtow" to his majesty. At that time, the Chinese court had no idea that Britain was the most advanced technologically in the "industrialized" countries. That was how isolated the Chinese were. Years before this episode, when Admiral Cheng Ho returned from the Cape of Good Hope and reported "there are no advanced civilizations to go to," the imperial palace stopped development of the naval fleet and China became an inward looking country while the west proceeded with the Age of Enlightenment, Age of Reasoning, and the Industrial Revolution began. All these took place while the Middle Kingdom stagnated in medieval redundancy until the Opium War.

If I met a tribe of ancients, I would first determine whether there was anything valuable to obtain, and if so, I'd try to trade (barter?) with them, if that works, good. If it doesn't, I may have to resort to other means.

yes because everyone wants the crap u have to barter,we are going to hand over our treasures and valuable commodities for ur junk.

but im so glad the west has finally opened the gates of China,they have finally unleashed what cannot be stopped,soon the yellow fever will take over the west,and the entire world economy will soon be assimilated like the mercer virus into the chinese machine.

Your omenous fears aren't the first. The "Yellow Peril" phrase has been brought up before, even before the Great War. In Singapore, there are numerous complaints about Ah Tiongs and their ways, same thing in Hong Kong where they're referred to as "locusts" And these terms are coined by people of similar historical background. I don't know how the world would eventually turn out. But it is going to happen.

The Brit copied Chinese technologies, not vice versa. It is a fact that they are Christian Crusaders came with the Bible to go war with other countries and mainly to established their God Kingdom of God. With the Bible and their God they were fearless and went in to not only own land but also build their temples of God everywhere on foreign lands (the Cross).

Of course for any underdog, they went back to make the Chinese technology works better and return to war with the Chinese with intent to occupy and/or divide and conquer China. Who do not want China vast land? Divide China ends the Chinese civilization.

Look at America and Greater Java (now Aus) for example, they came and took the whole continent for themselves. Fortunately Chinese are warlords with advanced education, military warfares, technology (sustainable one some more) which can withstand West nonsenses. Today China is still in 1 piece, solid as a rock.
