Pussy Riot coming to Singapore: Two members of the Russian punk rockers band Pussy Riot are coming to Singapore this week to attend the Prudential Eye Awards which celebrates emerging artists in Asia, according to reports.
The band’s controversial anti-Putin video “Mother of God, put Putin away” has been shortlisted for an award at the ceremony, said the husband of one of the band members.
It will be the first trip abroad for band members*Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina since their release from prison last month, and they are expected to be in Singapore from Jan 16-20.
In February of 2012, members of Pussy Riot jumped around the altar of Moscow’s top church, Christ the Savior Cathedral, and attempted to sing a “punk prayer” calling on the Virgin Mary to drive Russian leader Vladimir Putin from power.
Three members of the band were identified and sentenced to two years in prison for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.
Video footage of the stunt was uploaded online by the band, and was later banned in Russia.
But the controversial video has been nominated in the digital/video category of the Prudential Eye Awards, along with works of*China’s Yang Yong Liang and Australia’s Baden Pailthorpe and Daniel Crooks, according to*reports.
The winner in each of the ceremony’s five categories will be awarded a US$20,000 prize, and the overall winner will receive an additional $30,000 plus an opportunity to exhibit their work at the Saatchi Gallery in London, said organisers.
The winners are scheduled to be announced on Saturday.
One of the ceremony’s panel judges will reportedly be Russian art expert Andrei Yerofeyev, who was accused of inciting religious hatred with a 2007 exhibition of provocative art and barely avoided jail time.
The 24-year-old Tolokonnikova and 25-year-old Alyokhina were released from jail two months early under a Kremlin-backed amnesty ahead of the Winter Olympic Games next month in Sochi.
Both women slammed their release as a PR stunt, and at their first news conference*said they still wanted Putin out of power.
