Pneumonia cases shoot past alert level

THE number of people who have severe pneumonia and require hospital care has shot up beyond the 220-a-week alert level that triggers concerns of a high level of infections in the community.
Last week, 226 people with pneumonia were admitted to hospitals - leading to a Health Ministry warning earlier this week of rising respiratory infection rates.
