Singapore: The first person to be hauled to court for a gambling offence in Resorts World Sentosa has been sentenced to nine months jail.

53-year-old cabby, Loo Siew Wan pleaded guilty on 23 April to impersonating his brother to get into the Sentosa casino.

Loo, who’s an undischarged bankrupt, stole his elder brother’s driving license on 21 February this year and sneaked into the casino the next day.

He then tried to cheat at Baccarat by placing a bet after the winning result was declared.

He could have won S$190 with his S$200 bet if it weren’t for another gambler who spotted his ruse.

After he was exposed, Loo took back his chips and quickly left the table.

When he was identified and questioned by a police officer on 23 February, Loo tried to pass himself off as his sibling by again producing the stolen driver's license.

The attempt to cheat the casino dealer, could have seen Loo sentenced to up to ten years’ jail and fined.

As for cheating by impersonation, he could have been sentenced to a maximum of five years' jail and fined.
