CaseTrust cert misused in scam
By Vanessa Jalleh
A CASETRUST certificate has been misused in an online scam, said the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) on Thursday. The scam involved a hoax email sent to recipients informing them that they have received an inheritance. The sender, who portrayed themselves as a representative for the World Bank, told recipients that in order to receive the money, they had to transfer money to a designated bank account before gaining access to their 'inheritance'.
Recipients would then receive the CaseTrust certificate to prove the authenticity of the exchange. In a statement, Case said it does not engage in such transactions with The World Bank. The CaseTrust certificates are issued only to CaseTrust accredited companies, not to individuals. Case has made a a police report. A list of CaseTrust accredited companies are available on Case's official website at www.casetrust.org.sg.
