Car rental scam suspects caught
Posted: 02 September 2011 2110 hrs

SINGAPORE: Police have nabbed a man and a woman believed to be involved in a series of car rental scams at Beach Road.

Since August 24, at least 90 victims responded to an advertisement in the newspapers that offered cars for rental at a discounted price.

Police said the victims paid deposits of between S$150 and S$500 depending on the model of the cars they intended to rent and the period of rental.

The total amount deposited by the victims was about S$30,000.

The victims were told to collect their vehicles from August 28.

The scam unfolded when the victims arrived at the car rental office to collect the vehicles and found it closed.

They were also unable to contact the car rental dealers.

Police officers arrested the suspects, aged 38 and 28, in Teban Gardens on Thursday.

They will be charged in court on Saturday. If convicted, they could be jailed up to 10 years.
