Campbell was later promoted to Deputy Secretary, and served as Deputy National Security Adviser for a period before returning to the army in 2010.[3]
Campbell was promoted to the rank of major general and appointed as Commander Joint Task Force 633 in 2011, responsible for all Australian forces deployed in the Middle East, including Afghanistan. For his command in Afghanistan he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.[5] He was appointed the Deputy Chief of Army in February 2012.[3]
Campbell was promoted to lieutenant general on 19 September 2013 and appointed to oversee Operation Sovereign Borders, part of the Abbott Government's immigration policy aimed at stopping maritime arrivals of asylum seekers to Australia.[3]
In March 2015, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Campbell would be appointed Chief of Army from May of that year, taking over from the retiring Lieutenant General David Morrison.[6]
On 16 April 2018, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that Campbell would be promoted to general and succeed Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin as Chief of the Defence Force.[7]

Zulkifli had served as the Chief of Army in 2011 before being appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the National Defence University of Malaysia in 2013.

Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies joined the RNZAF in 1984 as an Officer Cadet and trainee pilot. After gaining his wings Air Vice-Marshal Davies entered the Air Transport role and flew Andover and Hercules aircraft. In 1999 Air Vice-Marshal Davies was appointed as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his role in the 1998 mid-winter Antarctic rescue mission from McMurdo Station.

In June 2000 Air Vice-Marshal Davies graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff Course at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, before returning to New Zealand as the Assistant Director of Joint Operations and Plans at Defence Force Headquarters in Wellington. In December 2003 he was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander and appointed as Commanding Officer No 40 Squadron in a position he held until January 2007 when he took up the J35 position at Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand.

In January 2008 Air Vice-Marshal Davies was promoted to Group Captain and posted to Air Staff as Assistant Chief Air Force Capability. He then took up his dual role as Officer Commanding 485 Wing and Senior Commander Auckland in November 2009 before attending the Royal College of Defence Studies in London in 2013.

Air Vice-Marshal Davies was promoted to Air Commodore on 13 September 2013 and has held a variety of command and Headquarters positions including Assistant Chief of Air Force Capability, Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Intelligence, and Air Component Commander at Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand.

Air Vice-Marshal Davies was promoted to his current rank on 23 March 2016 when he assumed the role of Chief of Air Force, and following this was appointed Vice Chief of Defence Force effective 10 September 2018. He is a champion for enhancing diversity in the NZDF, and promoting innovation, empowerment and leadership across all ranks, particularly at junior levels.

Tim Fraser was educated at Lord Williams’ School in Oxfordshire [not a university] and joined the Royal Navy in 1982. A surface warfare officer, he has had the privilege of commanding 4 ships: the patrol craft HMS Archer (1989 to 91); the T42 Destroyers HMS Gloucester (1997 to 98) and HMS Cardiff (as the Captain Fifth Destroyer Squadron, 2001 to 03) and the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious (2006 to 07). He has served as the United Kingdom Maritime Component Commander in Bahrain (2010-11); and as the Senior British Military Advisor in US Central Command HQ in Tampa, Florida (2012 to14) and from 2017 as the Chief of Joint Operations at the PJHQ, prior to promoting to 4* as Vice Chief of Defence Staff in May 2019.
In between sea and operational appointments, he has served in a diverse range of shore roles, but predominantly on the Central Staff in the Ministry of Defence. Most recently (2014 to 17) he served as the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Capability and Force Design) focusing on the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review.
He was made a Companion of the Bath in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
