The Université de Sherbrooke is sticking to its decision to admit a student to its medical school despite mounting concerns by parents and Jewish doctors’ groups over social media posts he is alleged to have made that were antisemitic, homophobic and sexist — and despite the fact Quebec’s lieutenant-governor has now stripped him of a youth medal over the controversy. Ian Préfontaine, a spokesperson for Lt.-Gov. Manon Jeannotte, confirmed on Friday that it has rescinded Ahmad Mousattat’s Youth Medal, awarded to him at a ceremony on April 26 in Laval. The Journal de Montréal first reported that Mousattat’s medal was taken away.
In a statement, Préfontaine went into more detail about the medal revocation: “The office of the lieutenant-governor of Quebec has removed Ahmad Mousattat’s name from the Quebec lieutenant-governor’s medal register, and he has been notified of this decision. “Dawson College sent us a letter asking us to withdraw its recommendation to support Mr. Mousattat’s candidacy,” Préfontaine added. The Journal had quoted Préfontaine as saying that Dawson “confirmed to us that the student had admitted to writing messages that were, shall we say, inappropriate.” Donna Varrica, director of communications and corporate affairs at Dawson, offered a slightly different version of the circumstances surrounding the removal of the medal, which is awarded to students in recognition of volunteer service for the benefit of the community. “We have never requested the removal of a Youth Medal to a student, though we have rescinded the recommendation of a student to the lieutenant-governor’s office for a Youth Medal,” Varrica said in an email. “The selection of recipients of the Youth Medal lies solely with the lieutenant-governor’s office, and by extension one would assume, the removal as well.”
