If they had spent the toil & effort relocating their families rather than trying to tunnel through a mountain, they would have done it a lot faster and saved themselves years of heartache.

their farmland are there.
2] just like here , you cannot just move to anywhere you like.
you think they can move to the other of the mountain and just use any empty land there for farming ?

Their ancestors probably didn't need to have much contact with the outside world back then, unlike now. Besides, they may not feel moving away is a better solution for them.
