For years the people of Zhongzhai village, Wenshan, Yunnan province, have been blocked from the outside world by a mountain.

But after six years, four men have finally carved a five kilometer stretch out of the remote mountainous area.

The four families endured years of hardship, one man even partly losing the function of his hand, spending all their saving on clearing
the hilly road and building an enormous debt of 80,000 yuan ($11,895) despite each family only earning 500 yuan a year.

But the group – who have been dubbed the "Modern Yu Gong" say it has all be worth it, "As long as our children get a way to go to school," said one.

I watched a documentary before. A elderly Indian man did the same all by himself in India but spending more than 10-15 years in the process.

Who the f--- ask them to settle behind the mountain in the first place

That's funny. You mean before those years the mountain wasn't there?

If they had spent the toil & effort relocating their families rather than trying to tunnel through a mountain, they would have done it a lot faster and saved themselves years of heartache.

That is what I call massive, unmitigated stupidity.

If there was a similar scenario in Singapore, sinkies would take pictures of the mountain and send the images to stomp.

its akin to asking why

the 80 ....

their ancestors screwed up and ended up picking a hellhole for their village. and their descendants get poorer and find it harder to get out of the hellhole as centuries go by.

Maybe their ancestors settle there to avoid invasions or gahmen troops...safer mah, but in this day and age no longer relevant mah

In SinkieLand, a lot of things are taken for granted ...

It's very inspirational to hear that people moved mountain just so that their off-springs can get an education!

Country folks are very attached to their ancestral land. Live there, die there, buried there.

remote mountain basins are best hideouts from the enemy. china had so many invasions and wars in the past. they're most likely surviving generations from a hunted clan or dynasty whose ancestors took refuge in the basin.

They should just behave like you. And get themselves killed by enemies as soon as possible.
