Today I saw a Filipino staff nurse, putting on a sweater for her little child. Her Filipino husband looks on by the side. Then it dawn upon me, is not because Singaporeans had through many years of nation building had created a city- country, safe, stable and sustainable for decent people who wants to have their family here. Where streets are safe, even water from almost any taps are safe for consumption. Unlike Philippine where the moment you get onboard their taxi from airport, the taxi driver would make sure all the doors are locked – because of robbers waiting to mug the cab of its contents?! Where safe water direct from taps are almost a rarity than commonality.
This Filipino couple saw, I believe a place suitable to start their family. In exchange for their stay here, the Filipino staff nurse was there to nurse maybe your loved ones while you were busied with your work. Or the Filipino man who serve you earnestly in the restaurant making you forget the toils in the day.
I’m not sure if we have enough for more of them but I certainly am sure, surely they do not deserve the scorn from Singaporeans.
They were here because we were first admired. Can we carry ourselves worthy of that admiration? Or we shut ourselves away from them?
From a distance, you look like my friend yet we are at war….
Perhaps it’s timely to remind ourselves, we are first one singular human race not Chinese, Malays, Indians, Filipinos, Europeans etc etc etc.
And we would protect our universal race, wouldn’t we?
