WTF special treatment once again? KNNBCCB PAP :oIo:

Singapore top swimmer Joseph Schooling granted National Service deferment

The government has granted swimmer Joseph Schooling's request to defer his National Service obligation, enabling the 18-year-old to focus on training until after the 2016 Olympics.

He is due for enlistment in 2014 but has been granted deferment until 31 August 2016.

Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen said in Parliament on Monday that the ministry had received a request from the swimmer's parents earlier this year.

He said: "The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth supported the appeal for deferment as they assessed that in his previous achievements in international competitions, Mr Schooling had potential to do well in the next Olympics.

"As this appeal satisfies all the conditions for deferment of exceptional sportsmen, the Armed Forces council has decided to grant deferment for Mr Schooling for full-time NS till 31 August 2016 in order for him to train and do well in 2016 Olympic Games. He will be enlisted for full-time NS once his deferment ends."

Schooling, is based in the United States where he is ranked among the top swimmers in his age group. He was the youngest competitor to qualify for the semi-finals of the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley at the world championships in Barcelona this year.

For Sinkieland athletes, doing well in the Olympics means 'breaking or maintaining personal best record'.

You can forget about medals, unless of course, you hire some medal mercenaries from China's national ping pong B team.

I thought those continue studies can defer?:D

KNN defer NS you guys CPCB KL lah,
Patrick Tan, went to USA to do research and considered as NS.

After all handsom Joseph is only defering leh, he will still serve NS. Patrick Tan totally no serve NS ok.

pls pls pls. pls dont bully Joseph handsome boyboy

Sg government probably learnt from the previous experience of Ang Peng Siong - one time Asian flying fish.

When he was at his prime (which was also the age to be enlisted), Ang Peng Siong had to serve national service without deferment. There, all the army training conflicted with the muscles set of a swimmer. He went downhill after that and never recovered.

Back then, Ang Peng Siong was Singapore best hope, but NS practically killed his sports career.

How about those genius prodigy kids especially the musicians read many had to forgo their citizenship as NS cannot be deferred?

what a progressive move by mindef. good job. there should be more deferments granted to our sportsmen. the deferment program should be expanded to include other fields besides sports.

I totally agree with this. People who have been bypassed for this opportunity should not begrudge the current generation and future Singaporeans of getting such deferments. Yes, preventing worthy people from deferring NS in order to pursue achievements which is yet another stupidity of our moronic money chasing PAP (and they should be voted out asap, no doubt about that).

But, better late than never. If at least now they are willing to unbend and allow deferments to those who have a chance of excelling, we should totally welcome it. Let's no be selfish that because we, who are past our prime, could not do so during our peak. Let's give a chance to our children and future generations.

Not just in the sports fields, but also the arts and humanities - let's give those budding musicians, talented pianists and violinists, brilliant academics, etc who are true Singaporeans (and not china-bought mercenaries) the opportunities to excel in their fields and do the country proud; instead of holding them back with this stupid NS which just serves to devalue Singaporeans in the eyes of employers, who prefer cheap, non-NS foreigners anyway.

this was something i wrote back in 2007...

i certainly agree that the current NS period is a tad too lengthy, and i certainly agree that instead of constitutional conscription, men between 18~20 years of age should be allowed to choose their entry time into the armed forces, paid a full salary instead of the current allowances.

Zhihau's suggestion is a good one.

Defer 2 years ok what.
Back then my time if served partial put securitydeposit can defer few years for studies.
Patrick Tan's 12 years is a record only for VIP elites.

Totally agree with posters that this is a move in the right direction.
No matter this is wayang or not, whether it will be abused or not, it signals a change to be more flexible. Extend it to sportsmen, musicians, and any bright sons whose careers would otherwise be cut short by that 2 years.

Granted that the previous generations had it tough, and many sacrificed and had their dreams dashed by the rigidity of the regime, this is a time we can make it better for our sons. I hate to see the "evil mother in law" syndrome. Like in those old Cantonese movies, because the woman was abused by her own mother in law, she will now abuse her daughter in law because she had it tough, so why should her daughter in law have it any better? It is a never ending vicious cycle. We are better than that.
