I am 32 years old and working for an engineering company for more than 5 years now. Currently am a structural engineer and my relationship with my boss had all along been quite good.

The company is taking on more infrastructure projects this year even though property has been slowing. My boss told me that if I continue to work hard, he can promote me to project manager.

You see, the thing about working in construction is that you need to be at least at a management role by 30s otherwise you will be retrenched in your 40s as you will be deem too old and unworthy to contribute. So this promotion is actually very important to me.

Unfortunate I had to attend reservist for more than 2 weeks and was not able to work. It is quite surprising to me as they had not called me more than 8 years after I ORD and only recently. Seems like this is the case for many people.

Even though it is only 2 weeks, This was quite serious as there is little chance that you can be absent when there is a project. Deadlines have to be met and SAF seems to not understand this.

As a result, my boss decided to promote someone else instead and I am feeling quite sad over this. Even though I didn't lose my job or anything, only god will know when the next promotion opportunity comes.

But by then I will already be too old and may be retrenched like many others as I am deemed not to make the cut. I find it very unfair that Singaporeans are subject to the whims of MINDEF and NS. The worse part is that I still have cycles to serve and they have the right to call me as and when they want to. I think I am not alone when talking about the opportunity costs of NS. It seems that many Singaporean males have suffered as well but no one seems to speak about it.

Dumb fuck dunno how to siam meh ? 1000 n one ways to avoid ICT

First thing after ORD is to get yourself downgraded n excuse ICT liao

Enslavement is never right.

Reservist and ICT is a no no for project managers. Owners hate disruptions! FT is best! Can work 365 days without disruptions.

if this guy was truly valuable to the company; he would have been promoted long ago.
Dont blame ict!

Probably his bosses pulling a fast one ans use ICT as a pretext not to promote him.

First, he is not "member"....second, he did not grease his manager "member" enough, third, he thinks he is so damn good that his boss would promote him ( psst....FT cheaper, faster..), lastly & most important, WHO DID HE VOTE FOR! :D

Company projects more important or ICT more important?
Hope employee learn a lesson, better sign on with mata or saf. Like that no need reservist lor.
Also hope company learn a lesson, better hire a FT without ICT and reservist liabilities. Project disruptions and delays can kena LD one. Unlike ASS MRT.

In 1996, my Japanese boss told me frankly that, they have an 'unwritten' rule to employer only SINgapore PR or other National, for they cannot afford to loose time in certain client relationship...where market movement mean loosing million of bucks in seconds....for SINgaporeans have National Slavery liability.....the number of SINgaporeans in the company is the minimum to satisfy the government...

Nothing has changed then...& this go way back to 1984.....what is new?? nothing...SINgaporeans...are 'screwing' themselves everyday....& still will ...only know, how to groan, complain & whine...

ICT is good for Singaporeans. You think anyone got chance to handle a real weapon? Male Singaporeans are indeed privileged to have chance to handle a real state of art like SAR 21. Also, with ICT, you will become fitter.

Sometimes a promotion is not necessarily a good thing. You get a bump in your pay, but the additional amount of work you need to do is not worth it.

Maybe he had dodged a bullet. ;)

Exploitative work culture in Sinkieland. Who did you vote for?

It's good to handle a real weapon, but quite pointless as you can't take the weapon home or to Orchard Road. That spoils the fun and defeats the purpose.

All the armskotes in army camps should be opened up and then allow the general public to borrow weapons like library books.

Never heard such bullshit in all my life. Anyone who deserves a promotion will get one regardless of ICT schedule.

This is really sad and unlucky. Everyone have their fair share of bad luck. Hope you get a good chance soon.

There is a Chinese saying that there will be 3 elements that one needs to depend on for the outcome of any rising opportunity.
1) Time
2) Place
3) People

Lack of anyone will result the opportunity to fade away.
