A village in Zhumadian in central China's Henan province has been free from thieves for 60 years, reports local news website Dahe, while residents believe that cacti grown in the area is keeping potential thieves at bay.
The village has 46 households and 150 acres of farm land. Cacti now grows on walls of the houses and cactus farming is one of the village's main sources of income.
One resident said that the cacti are protecting the village from the outside. While an 83-year-old resident told the paper that cactus farming was introduced by a resident called Xu Dao in 1951, adding that Xu initially planted a cactus seed in the wall of his house and his neighbors soon followed, leading to cacti being planted everywhere in the village.
