A contributor on citizen journalism website STOMP was returning to Singapore from Malaysia with his family when the bus they were on burst into flames in the middle of an expressway near Yong Peng in Johor.
The STOMP contributor, known only as tom1986sg, recalled that the bus was 50 minutes behind schedule, but no one argued as they were tired and just wanted to board the bus and get some sleep during the journey.
However, halfway through the journey, around the vicinity of Johor Bahru, the bus caught fire and there was smoke. All the passengers began to panic and the bus driver shouted at everyone to alight from the bus.
The situation seemed out of control and some children were crying, according to tom1986sg.
He then called a relative who was staying nearby to help pick up his children and elderly family members. His relative managed to capture some footage of the burning bus before he arrived at the scene.
Transtar Travel took several hours to dispatch a replacement bus to pick up all the stranded passengers.
The next day, tom1986sg managed to contact the manager of Transtar Travel and he related the story about the trip. However, the manager was not apologetic and argued that he should have bought travel insurance from the company before the trip.
The managed offered a cheque for $100 as compensation for him and his family, but he never cashed the cheque and has "vowed never to travel with Transtar Travel again."
Other netizens empathised with tom1986sg. However, one said that he should be lucky he escaped unscathed.
