A fair playing field, compensation and an even distribution of wealth
During my NS days my Poly cohorts many of them are very intelligent and I am sure they are many times better then the cheaper labor today. Not to mention the fake qualifications and poor quality Poly graduates today like the Myanmar guy here with very poor English, definitely not talents but just cheap labor. Many of my Poly cohorts are now unemployed. Especially those I know from Mechanical Engineering but I believe it affects across all functions today.
While I agree that there is competition due to globalization, I disagree that there should be a certain class of people exempted from competition (PAP and especially the ministers). Yes, one might argue that LKy have put in place competition amongst PAP ministers but ministers must also face competition similar as the common man or else its just self serving. Preaching others to be competitive but they themselves are not is not fair and certainly not meritocracy.
I am not impressed by scholars who don’t think but are just paper smart and protected by the system as long as they just tow the party line while the rest of the people are expected to compete in a globalized world. After all, many of investments are actually by using the peoples money so Singaporeans deserve fair distribution of wealth. While I agree those running the country should get more than others but just look at the disparity.
The argument that ministers salary should be pegged to the private sector is also flawed because these ministers are not accountable for anything so far. The many huge losses in GIC and Temasek, Mas Selamat escape, YOG budget overrun etc etc etc Shouldnt all these ministers be sacked including LKY who is chairman of GIC?
So therefore, even before opening the doors wide for foreigners, the right thing to do is to ensure that all Singaporeans are compensated for all the lost years in NS and the restrictions to local University education for Poly graduates and others who could not afford overseas Uni and many other policies to disadvantage Singaporeans.
Why? Because many of the foreigners came here with fake qualifications and cheaper or subsidized Uni edu from their own countries. Even those from the western world who got their highly subsidized qualifications.
To all Singaporeans who lost their jobs and/or in heavy debts because of mortgage and intentional high cost of living, do not despair. It is not your fault in the first place because it is the system that disadvantaged you intentionally for the benefit of just a certain group and remember what they earned as salary is taxpayer’s money. CPF together with HDB mortgage loan is nothing more than just a debt trap.
I, for one, even if I end up as a bankrupt or destitute, I know that it’s not that I am incompetent or stupid but it’s because of this unfair system which ensures that a certain group benefits by taxing the poor. If we take all taxes, direct and indirect, we are taxed the highest in the world.
