SINGAPORE: An unemployed 21-year-old man has been given 30 months' probation for theft and cheating, involving S$11,330.57.

Maung Than Htet, who is a Permanent Resident, also has to complete 200 hours of community service.

The court heard Maung committed the offences between March and April last year.

On five occasions, he stole credit cards from the letter boxes of his victims who lived in his block of flats in Yishun.

Maung then went on a shopping spree using the credit cards to pay for items such as bags, clothes, gold bars, hotel stays and liquor.

Defence lawyer Sng Kheng Huat said it was "totally out of Maung's character" to commit the offences, adding that he comes from a well-to-do family

Mr Sng said Maung till this day cannot adequately explain what drove him to commit these offences.

Maung came to Singapore from Myanmar in December 2005 to join his mother, who was then working as a doctor here.

He became a PR in March 2006 and pursued a diploma and higher diploma in a private school.

If he is local, 48hr detention n charged in court, whichever comes first.
I've seen many of these in Cantoment for minor minor case.
