Briton accused of molest acquitted
By Shaffiq Alkhatib | Posted: 13 September 2011 1330 hrs

SINGAPORE: A 35-year-old British tourist who faced one count of molest in Singapore has been acquitted of the charge in a district court on Tuesday.

Qatar-based recruitment specialist Austin Charles Arnold Cowburn was accused of grabbing a 30-year-old woman's buttock at Clarke Quay's China One Pub on April 3.

Cowburn is now a free man after giving her a compensation of S$5,000.

He also apologised to the woman who sat grim-faced in the gallery with her husband.

Cowburn, who was represented by lawyer, Mr Thangavelu, said that he would like to convey his apologies for any outrage of modesty she suffered as a result of any "inadvertent actions" on his part.

Dressed in a pinstripe suit, the Briton looked relieved when District Judge Francis Remedios acquitted him and was seen thanking his lawyer profusely for his help.

Cowburn was also all smiles when he shook hands with Deputy Public Prosecutor Winston Man.

He could have been jailed up to two years and fined or caned if he had been convicted of molest.
