Fatal fall: The solider was climbing on Mont Blanc in the Italian Alps
A British soldier has reportedly been killed while climbing in the Italian Alps.
The 30-year-old fell 1,000 metres (3,280ft) from a precipice on Mont Blanc, Italian news agency Ansa reported.
It is understood the victim began his ascent on the French side of the mountain but fell on the Italian side.
His body was transported to the town of Courmayeur.
Italian police confirmed a climber died at 8am this morning.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office later confirmed that a British man had died.
A spokesman said: "We were made aware of the death of a British national in Italy on 28 August. We stand ready to provide consular assistance."
The soldier is believed to have lost his rucksack during the fall.
It was reported that the man was climbing with a partner, who was unharmed.
