Republican senator Scott Perry has introduced a bill in the United States Congress to recognize Tibet as an independent nation

Amid the ongoing tension between the US and China, Republican lawmaker Scott Perry introduced a bill in the Congress to authorize President Donald Trump to recognise Tibet as an independent nation.

Perry, a Republican from Pennsylvania, has also introduced a similar bill for Hong Kong and these two bills have been referred to the House Committee Committee on Foreign Affairs.

China and the US have locked horns over coronavirus pandemic with Washington demanded a thorough investigation of the origin of the deadly virus which has claimed the lives of 351,866 people so far.

This comes after Washington decided to revoke Hong Kong's special status, an act termed by Beijing as "most barbaric".

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded that China should immediately make the Panchen Lama’s whereabouts public and uphold its international commitments to promote religious freedom. Pompeo’s statement, calling where he called the Panchen Lama one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism with spiritual authority second only to the Dalai Lama, had irked Beijing.

China kept Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, under political detention and named another boy Gyaltsen Norbu to the position.

Last week, Beijing said that the 11th Panchen Lama is now a college graduate with a stable job.

Speaking on the issue, foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Nyima “received free compulsory education when he was a child, passed the college entrance examination and now has a job.”

He further said that neither Nyima, now 31, nor his family doesn’t want to be disturbed in their "current normal lives."

Pompeo's remarks came on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the disappearance of the 11th Panchen Lama. He further stressed that promotion and protection of religious freedom is a priority for the Department of State as people of all faiths face severe repression and discrimination in China.

First they were invaded by the Mongols, but since the Mings defeated the Mongols it is legitimately part of the Great Chinese Empire since 750 AD. Countless uprisings, foreign interference from the British, the Indians, the Nepalese but they were eventually driven out. The last legitimate agreement between the CCP and Dalai Lama made in the 1950s but Dalai being the power craze snake that he was, repudiated the agreement and chose to fight China. So China did not invade Tibet. Tibetans could not come to terms with their thousand years of history of failed revolutions. If you regard China’s control of Tibet as an invasion, that dated back to 1300 years. In that spirit, America belongs to the red Indians. Singapore belongs to Indonesia via the Majapahit empire.
