As we just reported, Iran's state TV has announced 40 days of public mourning and seven days of public holiday over the death of Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader.

At the moment, Iran's state TV news channel IRINN is showing photos of Khamenei with recital of Quran in the background, with a black banner on the top left corner.

The presenter previously read a statement by Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) officially confirming the death of Khamenei, blaming the US and Israel for his death. The statement said that Khamenei's "martyrdom" will be the beginning of "an uprising in the fight against the oppressors".

Earlier, state media said that Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law and grandchild were also killed in the attacks.

According to the Fars News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, there are reports that one of Khamenei's daughters-in-law has been killed as well.

I heard you win extra bonus points or credits if you die as a 'martyr' during Ramadan. Islamofascists should be rejoicing.

Iran’s elite revolutionary guards have said the most ferocious offensive operation in the Islamic Republic’s history will begin any moment now, in a threat directed at Israel and the United States.

Iran’s state functions have been quick to vow retaliation, following confirmation the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the US and Israeli strikes on Saturday.

“The heaviest offensive operations in the history of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will begin shortly toward the occupied lands and bases of the American terrorists,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned a short time ago.
The Iranian government said in a statement that “this great crime will never remain unanswered and will turn a new page in the history of the Islamic world.”

Meanwhile, the country’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) said the joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran would “begin a massive uprising in fighting the world’s oppressors.”

The SNSC, a powerful body that coordinates Iran’s national defense and security strategies, said Iran and its allies will only be “more resiliant and determined.”

The sun is rising over Tehran now, where explosions have continued to be heard over the last few hours.

The Iranian capital bore the brunt of dozens of deadly US-Israeli strikes on Saturday, and Trump has warned the bombing will continue despite the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

About an hour ago, US Central Command posted a clip on X, external showing US missiles launching and exploding into their targets, saying: "CENTCOM is now delivering swift and decisive action as directed".

The Israeli Defence Forces a short while ago also said it has launched another wave of strikes from dozens of fighter jets, aimed at Iranian missile supplies and defence systems.

"The Israeli Air Force has struck more than 30 targets belonging to the Iranian terror regime across Iran, including aerial defense systems, missile launchers, regime targets, and military command centers," the IDF said in its latest update.

The commander-in-chief of Iran’s IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), Mohammad Pakpour, and the secretary of Iran’s Defence Council, Ali Shamkhani, have been killed in US and Israel strikes on Iran, official IRNA news agency announced.

Earlier, the Israel Defence Forces had announced the names of seven members of Iran’s security leadership, including both Pakpour and Shamkhani, which they claimed had died.

Mohammad Pakpour was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the IRGC after his predecessor was killed during the 12-day Iran-Israel war back in June 2025. He was previously the commander of the IRGC’s Ground Forces.

Shamkhani, who was also a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, was injured during the 12-day war.

Both Pakpour and Shamkhani had been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department.

People celebrate in the streets after announcement of Khamenei’s death

Cheers and celebrations were heard in parts of Iran Saturday night as news filtered through that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei had been killed.

Videos shared by anti-regime activist accounts and geolocated by CNN show some streets in Tehran and other cities full of cars blaring their horns, fireworks being set off, and loud cheers from crowds of people who came out onto the streets.

In one video from Galleh Dar, in Fars province, people are shown tearing down a monument as fires burn around them. In another clip, from the city of Isfahan in central Iran, people can be seen cheering and lighting up sparklers in the streets.

One resident who spoke to CNN said some young people in his neighborhood went out and celebrated Saturday night in northern Tehran.

They were loud and joyous, he said. But many others, like him, took the news with a mix of shock and anxiety for what’s to come.

He told CNN he had a restless night knowing the situation in his country will change. Will the death of Khamenei put Iran on a path of prosperity or will it cause more chaos? That’s the question that kept him up all night.
