My question is how did they find out mid flight the suspension was problematic. Maybe the planes nowadays have very sophisticated self diagnostic systems? Dunno ..... Need an expert to confirm

Yes I agree. Taking off and landing are the two most crucial aspects of flying. But they have already taken off, hence what's the difference between landing in Changi and landing at their destination in Shanghai? Unless they feel that the ground crew in Shanghai or the equipment there are not up to standard?
