Jobless man charged with cheating
Posted: 29 July 2011 1513 hrs

SINGAPORE: A jobless man was charged on Friday with one count of cheating another man, Kwek Chye Hock, of more than S$2,000 earlier this month.

Sim Kheng Hwee was allegedly involved in a scam with an accomplice who pretended to be from the Credit Bureau Singapore.

It is believed that Sim accomplice phoned Mr Kwek, 35, and told him that he could help him obtain S$450 under the government's Workfare scheme.

He then allegedly instructed Mr Kwek on the so-called necessary transactions he had to make at his bank's Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to supposedly obtain the money.

It is believed that he followed his advice without knowing that he was transferring the money into Sim's bank account instead.

Police said they have received at least eight reports from victims who were cheated in a similar ruse since July 6, each involving up to S$4,000.

Sim was arrested along Stirling Road on Wednesday evening and his case will be mentioned again on August 5.

His alleged accomplice was arrested on July 28. He will be charged in court on July 30.
