A spokesperson from the Indonesian transport ministry said the commercial flight SJY182 took off at about 2.45pm WIB and was scheduled to land in Pontianak at 4.15pm.

"The control tower's last contact with the plane was at 3.40pm, before the contact was lost," said the spokesperson in an exchange on WhatsApp.

Sriwijaya Air said in a statement it was still gathering more detailed information regarding the flight before it can make any statement.

In a series of tweets, FlightRadar24 the Boeing 737-500 aircraft lost more than 10,000 feet of altitude in less than one minute, just four minutes after departing from Jakarta.

The aircraft is a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500, according to registration details included in the tracking data.

A passenger plane with more than 50 people on board has gone missing shortly after take-off from the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 lost contact en route to Pontianak in West Kalimantan province, officials said.
Flight tracking website Flightradar24.com said the aircraft had lost more than 3,000m (10,000ft) in altitude in less than a minute.
The transport ministry said search and rescue efforts were under way.
It said last contact with the plane, with the call sign SJY182, was made at 14:40 local time (07:40 GMT).
According to registration details, the plane is a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500.
Sriwijaya Air, a local carrier, said it was still gathering information about the flight.
The plane is not a 737 Max, the Boeing model involved in two major crashes in recent years.
The first of those, in October 2018, involved an Indonesian Lion Air flight which plunged into the sea about 12 minutes after take-off from Jakarta killing 189 people.

Same place where air asia plane crashed 6 years ago.near pontianak.
I was informed it carried covid vaccines so it could have been hijacked.

Ok, only 62 passenegrs. not so bad. There are 260 million Indons, still got a lot to spare.

Air Asia crashed on 28th December 2014. Same rainy monsoon we got thus year. Just as plane was crossing the equator.

first time hear this airline name, is it a village airline?

It looks like the plane malfunctioned within seconds after takeoff. What else do you expect from indon airlines? Fly by SQ, you morons! Preferably first class!

How many SQ and Silkair has crashed and burned over the years?
And how many unpublicized incidents covered up until other airlines exposed the flaw and eventually had to concede?
I've long stopped flying with it because it's not a great way to fly.
