SINGAPORE: Smoke was seen rising from an escalator at Ang Mo Kio MRT station leading to the underground linkway to AMK Hub on Monday afternoon (Feb 5).

The escalator has been shut down and the linkway closed "for commuter safety", said SMRT vice president for corporate communications Margaret Teo in a statement to the media. She added that train services on the North-South Line are not affected, and that the transport operator is investigating the incident.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said one person was taken to Singapore General Hospital at about 3pm for smoke inhalation. Channel NewsAsia understands that the person is an SMRT employee.

SMRT investigating incident of smoke from AMK station escalator

SINGAPORE — A section of Ang Mo Kio MRT station has been cordoned off, after an escalator there was seen emitting smoke on Monday afternoon (Feb 5).

In a media statement, SMRT vice-president of corporate communications Margaret Teo said that the rail operator is investigating an incident involving an escalator leading towards the underground linkway to Ang Mo Kio Hub.

The escalator has been shut down and the linkway closed “for commuter safety”. Train services on the North-South Line have not been affected, and SMRT will provide updates, she added.

TODAY understands that an SMRT technician was sent to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Photos circulating on social media showed the station shrouded in smoke, with SMRT staff redirecting commuters from the affected area. Singapore Civil Defence Force officers were also seen at the scene.

Time to bring in prominent oppies for questioning. We will get the truth out of them once we electrocute their nipples. What's the mata waiting for?

I bet my last dollar, due to lack of maintenance.

they were overhauling escalators on several mrt stations late last year, after the sump pump fiasco and signaling breakdowns. either they missed this one or maintenance crew screwed up during the overhaul process. supervisors were no where to be seen when lowly grunts did their work. must be banging hookers in geylang or drinking kopi and chomping on kaya toast at toast box.

whichever the case may be, they'll find some grunts and/or supervisors for the chopping block. No proper accountability and possible falsification of maintenance records. Big bosses will be untouched.

in sg it's always great to be at the apex of any pyramid. ownself checks ownself.

They can find excuses for anything under the sun in PAP 101, recently the 'ape' looking masala good says..."it will flood sometime". In PAP 101, Chap 8, section 888, it says, " if the escalator doesn't smoke, we worry". It us a minor situation, don't get xenophobic, let is move on, clear the station, do good , do together, do it now!

The maintenance people must be having too much pressure from the top, to DO GOOD DO TOGETHER & DO IT WELL!!...but the duit, not so well!. So, apply 'too much grease' in the moving parts...when rubbed together, SMOKE will appear.

The supervisor's maybe from Baguio or Munbai, the most likely to get the chop..will be the unionised SINGAPOREANS...who will be made the scapegoat..
