Police in northern Brazil say one man has been arrested after a referee who fatally stabbed a player during a match was decapitated by spectators who stormed the field.

Local reports said the incident, which took place on 30 June in the remote Brazilian town of Pio XII, escalated when the player, 30-year-old Josenir dos Santos, became involved in an argument with the referee, Octavio da Silva.

As the confrontation became physical and Dos Santos refused to leave the field, Da Silva allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the player, who died while being taken to hospital.

Reports said that outraged spectators responded by running on to the field and stoning Da Silva, before severing his head and sticking it on a stake in the middle of the field.

Police at the regional headquarters of Santa Ines said a 27-year-old man was arrested on 2 July, with the investigation continuing.

Police spokesman Valter Costa was quoted as saying: "We will identify and hold accountable all those involved in this incident. One crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not correspond with state law."

Brazil faces mounting pressure to show it is a safe place for tourists before 12 cities host the 2014 World Cup and Rio de Janeiro the Olympics in 2016. The Confederations Cup in June was marked by violence as anti-government protestors angered by the amount of money being spent on the events clashed with police.

Football match ends in referee being decapitated

Brazil's World Cup preparations continue to be crashed by waves of violence, with an amateur football match ending in horror – when a referee was decapitated after stabbing a player to death.

The incident occurred on June 30th (NZT) in the stadium Pius XII, in a small county of São Luís, Maranhão.

According to Correio24horas, it started when referee Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan (pic) red-carded Josenir dos Santos Abreu.

Josenir refused to leave the field and proceeded to verbally abuse and assault Octavio.

The 20-year-old referee retaliated by stabbing the 31-year-old player multiple times with a ‘machete–like’ knife, that he was carrying on his person during the match.

Whilst Josenir was taken to hospital in critical condition, friends and relatives invaded the field – tying up the referee and torturing him.

Upon hearing the news that Josenir had died on arrival at a local hospital, Octavio was stoned to death on the field.

His body was then quartered, decapitated and his head was pierced on top of a stake.

The lynching was captured on cellphones by onlookers, making its way to social networks, where the police were able to identify one of the suspects - Luis Sousa Moraes.

He was arrested on July 3rd (NZT) and two other suspects were identified and questioned.

In an official statement by Valter Costa, police chief of Santa Ines in Maranhão – he confirmed that the investigation was ongoing.

“Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact. We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.”

The man, named locally as Otavio da Silva, was attacked by supporters, who impaled his severed head on a stake in the middle of a pitch in the northern state of Maranhão.

According to the state's public safety department, Mr da Silva, 20, had sent off player Josenir Abreu at an amateur match in the rural district of Pio XII, named after a former Pope, last weekend.

Mr Abreu, 30, allegedly refused to leave the pitch and was said to be unhappy with Mr da Silva's attitude. A fight then broke out and the referee stabbed Mr Abreu in the chest. He died on the way to hospital.

Officials said that friends and relatives of Mr Abreu then "rushed onto the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body." Officers arrested a man on Tuesday on suspicion of murder. Luis de Sousa Moraes, 27, was one of three suspects wanted by police.

"Through the information passed by those who witnessed the incident, we identified all those involved and managed to arrest the first of them," said Valter Costa, the detective leading the investigation.

"We will identify and hold all those responsible to account. One crime never justifies another."

Security will be a major concern during next year's World Cup, which will be played at 12 cities around Brazil. Private security firms will be on patrol inside the stadiums but the country's military police will be on standby outside to deal with any altercations.

Earlier this year, a group of Palmeiras fans attacked their players at an airport in Buenos Aires after watching them lose 1-0 to Argentinian team Clube Atletico Tigre.

A month later, there were ugly scenes at a match between Argentinian side Arsenal and Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro when police clashed with players. Footage showed players attacking heavily armed police officers, who were carrying tear gas and rubber bullet guns.
