Brazilian model mocked for Superstorm Sandy photo shoot

A Brazilian glamour model has been mocked worldwide after appearing in a photo shoot on the scene of the destruction left by Superstorm Sandy in New York.

Nana Gouvea, 30, posed in a figure-hugging outfit against fallen trees and crushed cars, left by the superstorm that killed more than 80 people in the US.

Gouvea, who started modelling aged 10 before also starring in Brazilian soaps, posted the photographs on her Facebook page, attracting widespread criticism for the bad taste shoot.

Doug Alexander, who commented on Gouvea's Facebook page, said: "Just goes to show you, stupid comes in all shapes, sizes, colours and walks of life. In this case, stupid is beautiful."

Another commenter, Amy Lanyon, said: "How could you be so heartless and disrespectful. There are people homeless, no power, sewage leaking into their homes.

"Wouldn't you think volunteering your time or money to the relief fund would result in better PR? Yeah, the broken branches and busted up cars with people picking up their lives behind you is REAL sexy."

Her husband, music producer Carlos Keyes, took the images, which were seized upon by critics and used to send up the model. In a group called "Nana Gouvea in Disasters", spoof photographs poked fun at the model by placing her at the scene of other tragedies including 9/11, Hiroshima and even the crucifixion of Jesus.

Gouvea and her husband live in the 43rd floor of an apartment block in Manhattan, and witnessed Sandy grip the States. In an interview with Brazilian press earlier this week, she said: "The city is at a standstill. Everything is closed. Nothing is happening. Yesterday night, we had a blackout. "We haven't left the house since Sunday."

She told the website G1 she had stocked up on food before the storm and said: "We have everything in the freezer as well as a lot of fruit." Responding to the parody photographs, she told a Brazilian website: "I have seen them and I find them hilariously funny." Denying that the shoot was disrespectful, she added: "What nonsense. Everyone can take photos of the destruction in New York, only I can't? Give me a break."

She should show some connection she has with the background, not just stand there like a dead fish.
